Worked as a lead actor in Michael Winterbottom’s Silver Bear Award Winner At The Berlin film Festival ‘The Road to Guantanamo’. Filming experiences:

The experience has developed my capacity for empathy, as I was portraying real life characters in a true story. The way in which the film was made was also invaluable to developing my skills as an actor. Totally improvised dialogue, working long hours in a constantly changing and often intense working environment, with a small team of cast and crew who were all depending on each other – all this meant I was thrown in at the deep end and quickly developed a confident flexibility in front of the camera, and a strong work ethic.
Foreign travel also opened my mind to new experiences and customs, and forced me to improve my non-verbal communication including body language.

Arfan Usman is a rising actor who made his first appearance on the wide-screen in the award-winning drama, ‘Road to Guantanamo’.
Born in Gloucestershire in 1987, Arfan moved to Birmingham when he was ten years old. After graduating high school, he completed two years of college education before taking one year off for his debut film, Road to Guantanamo. After auditioning and being chosen for the role, Arfan spent one week with the Tipton Three in order to better understand their characters and experiences. He feels that acting in the movie was a positive way of portraying to the world the reality behind the experiences of the Tipton Three, and says the film opened his eyes to the suffering that many others are forced to endure. The film went on to win the Silver Bear Award at the 2006 Berlin Film Festival. Presently, he is pursuing a degree in drama from the Birmingham School of Acting.
