Business professional

Many corporate jobs, interviews and meetings require that you dress in a "business professional" manner. For those occasions, here are the guidelines you should follow:

Suit yourself
Wearing a well-tailored suit is a must. Underneath, sport a well pressed long-sleeve shirt, and a classy tie and belt. Finally, put on a fine pair of dress shoes.

Color
Dark colored suits are always more appropriate for professional business occasions. Keep in mind, however, that black is not appropriate. Instead, opt for darker shades of blue, gray and green.

Pants
Wearing short pants is a real fashion no-no, so make sure your pants have a slight break over the front of your shoes.

Ties
Your tie should reach your belt line.
Your tie should be conservative, like the rest of your attire.
Opt for solids, stripes and small patterns.
Shoes
Again, go for a classic pair but remember that conservative doesn't necessarily mean dull. Opt for rich looking black or brown leather, or cordovans. And keep them clean at all times.

Socks
Socks should always match your suit and cover all possible signs of skin.

Belt
Black leather belts are most versatile. Select one with a discreet buckle and avoid anything too flashy.

Other tips

When a strict business professional dress code is required, you should wear a minimum of one pattern and two solids between your suit, shirt and tie.
It's always a good idea to have a conservative hairstyle.
Always refrain from buttoning your bottom button (jacket).
Don't put any pens in your shirt pockets; put them in your suit jacket's inside pocket instead.

Business casual

Nowadays, many companies maintain looser dress codes, which allows employees to dress "business casual." A business casual dress code is also appropriate for dress down Fridays.

Here are the main business casual guidelines.

Conservative
Generally, try to remain conservative. Avoid loud print shirts and sportier trousers, for example.

Color
Similar to business professional attire, dark colors are also more appropriate than lighter shades.

Pants
Chinos, 4-pocket pants and neat looking khakis are acceptable
Wear a nice oxford shirt, stylish long-sleeve polo or turtleneck sweater. Most conservative button-down shirts are also a great option.
You can always polish up your look with a nice sports coat or blazer.
Remember to wear classy shoes and match them with your belt.

Cocktail attire

Appropriate cocktail attire always depends on the formality of the event you'll be attending. As a general rule, evening cocktail parties are usually more formal than afternoon ones.

Formal dress codes

White tie
A white-tie event requires full dress. Ultra-formal, a white-tie affair entails a freshly laundered white wing collar pique shirt, crisp white pique vest and white pique tie. You'll also have to wear classic black trousers with a formal satin stripe, a traditional black tailcoat only covering the vest, and black patent shoes. Also, don't forget the cufflinks. White gloves are optional.
