"Thar be whales!" post in Carib Goodies blog

Thar be whales!

Whale watch tomorrow! Hubba hubba!

Hopefully we will spot some humpback whales. They migrate through our wates twice a year in winter and summer. There are never any guarantees of spotting a whale, but if I do, I will definately post the pictures!

Hi, Courtney:

Wind shear. That is how they know. Wind curls off the wing tips causing a curling disturbance pattern in the air which both birds and planes cannot safely fly through.

Birds fly in an organized flock, often in a V shape to avoid the air disturbance from the bird in front and to the sides. You will see fighter jets in similar formations for the same reason.

A small twitch in direction change by the leader causes such disturbance that the flight patch must be changed. One has the option of curling off on an opposing tangent or following quickly. With birds (and jets) the protection is in remaining with the group so they turn with the flow.

Hey Karl :)
Hope you see some and yeah please post some pictures !! It must be so awesome to watch them coming past...when we were in South Africa we used to see the sardines come past at a certain time too in a big black mass inder the waters with sometimes big sharks following eeekk. Its amazing how they all know which direction to go when there's so many thousands of them. Same with a huge flock of birds..how do they tell each other when they are all gonna turn to the left in a split second??

Nature is amazing!!

Well talk soon and happy whale watching !!
