VI Carnival 2007 Pics 04

Today's pictures are from the Adults Parade. This series is from a troupe called Shaka Zulu. Every year this troupe dresses like ancient Zulu warriors and reenact battle scenes from Southern Africa.

There are a lot more Carnival pictures, some very exciting and colorful. But I think I will take a break from Carnival and show you a few pictures from my photoshoot last weekend with New York model Rosa Marie Acosta Quiroz.

Historically the Zulu created their war outfits from the skins of cheetahs, leopards and lions and strapped layers of grass to their bodies. Then they painted themselves with charcoal, ash and limestone.

This outfit did two things. It camouflaged and concealed and it struck fear into their enemies, especially the way they could suddenly appear from the underbrush, surrounding you.

They really gave the British and the Dutch a good run for their money. If you look at history, there was no such thing as the Zulu tribe until a disgruntled African named Shaka pulled together peoples from many tribes that had been scattered and displaced by European occupation of southern Africa. They were an awesome fighting force that virtually crippled the slave and mineral trade for decades.
