I think your ex-boyfriend might be wrong about your modeling potential, but even the prettiest girl shouldn't hang her hopes on modeling just because she can turn guys' heads because there's a lot more to modeling than being pretty.
A lot of what makes a model appealing is connected to looks, no question, yet it's also tied to how she communicates whatever she and photographers who take her photo are trying to say to people seeing her picture(s). Every picture has a message. Think about it. A model is the one carrying the message and communicating it.
Some photos say, "Think of how these clothes will look on you!" Or some pics say, "This swimming suit looks damned good on me. Now think just how great it'll look on you." And so on.
Many photos say something about feelings on subjects. Just about any subject you can think of can have a model communicating a message about it. Successful models find ways to communicate those feelings and, quite often, sheer beauty isn't the only thing that's going to communicate those emotions. Your eyes and your body language play huge roles -- sometimes the most critical.
You'd be surprised just how often a drop-dead gorgeous beauty -- an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being heavenly dream best -- is actually not going to give a photographer the look he/she is trying to communicate for what he/she is trying to say. Or, more to the point, what the people paying the photog want said.
Sheer beauty usually comes into play when a photographer just wants the prettiest or most good-looking person in a photo so whatever the model (and the photog) is trying to sell gets the most attention. But even then, some looks sell and others don't. It all depends on the situation and how the model "speaks" with her look.
Just be the best you that you can be in front of the camera and let come what may. Believe in yourself because nothing can communicate or destroy a message that a model and/or photog is trying to say faster than self-confidence or lack of it.
I'd much rather have a model in front of my camera who believes she's got what it takes to get a message across than one who doesn't. If beauty plays a part in that message, then I'd much much rather have a model who believes she's pretty -- but isn't stuck up or bitchy about her beauty -- than one who doesn't.
You've got the looks to be a model. Maybe a very successful one. Your beauty won't be the only thing that'll make you successful, though. Keep your head on straight. Don't get bitchy or stupid. Remember that there are a lot of pretty girls and women out there who can model. Most of all, always try your best when you get a chance and believe in yourself.
