I am sure all will remember the " Tsunami" on the 26th of December 2004 where I live now, Sri Lanka, was the 2nd most affected after Indonesia. Over 50,000 people were dead within 10 minutes and made over a million people homeless. It all took not more than 10 minutes from 0910 in the morning. Bus loads, train loads of people that were travelling along the coastal belt in Sri Lanka just dissappreared in to the Ocean. I saved my life by just 15 minutes as I was on the beach 15 mnts before the Tsunami and was on my way home. In the history of Sri Lanka this is perhaps the wosrt disaster and even today there are thousands of people homesless and sleeping in tents, thousands of children without parents and an eqal number lost their whole families. There are families that dissappeared into theOcean completely and no one know who they are. The actual figures dead could be much more.
Soon after the Tsunami I did all I could do as a Social worker to help the people who survived who had nothing except what they were wearing. Many counries helped but unfortunately most of the Aid received never reached the people affected.
One reason for me to travel extensively to countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand soon after the Tsunami was to find whatever support I could get for those affected and I am ever so grateful for the Buddhist temple and the Monks in those countries who started to help re-build villages, houses and damaged temples and resotore them back . Those Monks and the people of those countries not only helpeld to re-bulid the places and houses but also donated a lot for the millions of children who were homeless, who had lost both parents and whole families by providing them clothes, books, pens, pencils, school bags and whet ever they could bring.
I am glad that even today I go about in these countries looking to find whatever I could to bring back for the poorest of the poor families who are still suffering after Tsunami.
I am more a social worker than a model and I hope I can use my modeling career to help the needy not only in this country but also in other countries specially to uplift the standards of the poor children. For me all the children in the world are the same. There is no colour bar, no race or religion. They are all the same.
I hope the rich who spend thousands of dollars to spend a vacation will part with a few dollars to help these children who has no hope, no future and no one to lean on.
