you might not excel in every area. i think your friend should specialize in areas where he is good [ with protography] and he can be successful with those.

Like Busola said it all depends on what type of photography he wants to do...some people will be interested in fashion, some landscape, some wildlife some architecture so they need to find something that interests them and work on improving on that...there is no point trying to shoot something you don't have any interest in because it will show in your shots

To excel always. That is the motto of the high school I graduated from. If you chose to take it on, be the best possible at it.

You do not have to learn everything at once to excel. But if a person truly excels in a given field, at that point, since the basic concepts are down to instinct, there should be no problem adopting to other aspects of the profession and excelling there as well.

Things have changed a lot since I started in the profession, especially the ease at which an amateur can now enter the business and make money, if not fame.

I would say that the most crucial area to excel in right now is...people and marketing skills...for one's self.
