What age should you have started learning to dance?
Like at a young age when your mind is like a sponge, or a teenager cause your so free spirited and have a passion for it?
Or is age not needed until retirement?
Howdy.I'm a 18 year old half asian from Ireland who really would love to get with an agency who can get her exposure or anything please look at my profile and get back to me :D

Personally I'd say if you have a passion for it age shouldn't matter but on the other hand unless you are a very quick study then starting at an early age would probably be more beneficial to you because you will have longer to perfect the form of dance you choose

Well i suppose it also depends on the shape and fitness of your body then.
I remember i used to salsa but stopped cause i prefered sports, as they werent teaching us much more then the basics of salsa which then started to bore me and annoy me when i got into trouble for adding new steps :dunno:
I dont know much about salsa but is it a set routine then.

I find that you should start at any age you want...as long as you feel comfortable...

You can learn anytime.

Good good then :D
Might just get back into it :D

I used to think you had to start at the least as a young teenager but a few years ago I joined a jazz class and discovered 3 young women who just started ballet, and did well. The best one never danced before she turned 23, and at 25 was sitting for an intermediate RAD exam. She also managed the splits in 1 year, and aced them by the 2nd year.

If that isn't proof you can start dancing at any age, I don't know what is! :D

Also, while starting at a young age develops reflexes, balance, and memory [as when learning a dance in the minimum amount of time is essential when doing syllabus work or workshops], if serious training is taken up while very young it can hinder physical development. 'Not if you do the right exercises' - sure, sure... but physiotherapists keep finding out bad effects from various exercises every year, and until word gets around you can easily hinder proper growth.

And this coming from someone who's been heavily biased from learning ballet at 3yrs old :shh:

The younger one starts dancing, the better. Muscle memory is key as well as developing the proper muscles at a young age before cartilage starts hardening into bone. Most great dancers have been at it their entire lives.
:cantlook: Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should

If you are going to become a professional dancer you have to start as early as possible, beginning from 6 yo or so.
If it's a hobby then doesn't matter what age really.

succesful professional dancers need years of practice and experience to be at the top of thier game. Being young also helps with the stamina required to be successful. Best to start early if you want to succeed.

I disagree about starting from a very young age to become a pro. If you have the talent, dedication, and actively pursue lessons, shows, and opportunities, you can start at almost any age.

"Muscle memory is key as well as developing the proper muscles at a young age before cartilage starts hardening into bone. "

Yes, very true, which is why it's such a risk to be dancing regularly from when you're young. If the exercises and methods you're taught overdevelop or strain anything without you or your teachers knowing that the exercises actually do that, you're in for some trouble. I developed fallen arches, an ache in my lower back during cold weather and periods, overdeveloped particular thigh muscles and never trained certain thigh muscles that 1. help the arch of the foot and 2. keep the knee cap moving properly, so my knees ache during certain exercise and make that awful clicking noise when I bend them all the way. Because of muscle memory I run the risk of regaining my old thigh bulges if I do certain normal and common exercise.

So... yeah, muscle memory, developing proper muscles, very important certainly, but doing the wrong thing will make the muscle memory work against you and of course hinder proper muscle development. Not to mention increase the risk of injury.

The best is to start when your like a baby.
So by the time you turn 13 you'd be super good and you'd have experience!
There's no age limit to dancing.
As long as your willing to be committed to it , then go ahead.
