Ideas For Curly Hairstyles?

Hey everyone! I've got a little problem. I've been stuck with 2 particular styles for years and I'm bored. One was a 2 length cut that left my hair forming a bell/triangle round my face [-not- a good cut, usually accidental on the hairdressers' part] and the other is the one I have now, layered and long. The problem with the second haircut is that the top layers frame my face the same way old pre-bell/triangle haircuts did  . There's also the problem of volume. Because of the incredible amount of hair I have, and it's current length, it tends to flatten the top with the weight :(

So basically my problem can be put like this:
1. I'd like a fun hairstyle.
2. I want to keep the length but!!! without the flat-top effect.

Any ideas? :endecided::dunno:

Marie:

I know your problem well!
Usually my hair is kept long and the top does get weighed down by both length and volume.
Must stay away from those volumizing shampoo's or my hair would be sticking out 2 feet from my head!

If your hair is going to naturally flip out like a bell then try to find a hair cut that is going to compliment that. OR. Train your hair out of it.
Depending on your hair, training it to do something other then what it naturally does can be a pain in the behind.
A lot of combing with the proper type of brush, the correct amount of blow drying, the right products, etc.

I don't know the technical term for all of this but a couple suggestions regarding volume.
Part your hair more to one side of your head which will give the appearance of more volume on top over all, and the small portion which is flatter will look to be intentional.
If you like to have a middle part you can weave your hair in sections/chunks. Take a part of your hair from the top of your head and cross it over the middle of your hair part to the other side, then bring the section directly behind it over to the other side of your head, so on and so forth from the front to the back of your hair line.

Do not use any heavy weight conditioners or other hair products on the top of your head, this will also weigh it down.
Their are specific gels/creams, etc that you can use at the base of your hair in such a manner to give more lift and definition to it.
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

Hey Angel, well I've always had a side parting as far back as I can remember - middle partings are just asking for the bell shape to come out, so at least every hairdresser has spared me that way since I was hip height.

Combing my hair has always been certain death to my curls and a wholesome welcome to frizz :( :dunno: I only ever brush or comb it when it's wet from washing.

What do you mean by heavy weight conditioners? Could you give me an example please? I'll look into those gels and creams :)

Hmmm well I'm at work right now lemme think if I can remember some names.

In the very least. Things like the "leave in conditioners" do not put those any where near your roots. Even a little of that can go a loooong way. I have pretty long and really thick hair, I only use a dime sized amount of leave in conditioners or any other product after cleaning my hair for that matter.
If there is evenly slightly too much concentration of a product in one place I will notice, it feels icky, it feels/looks weight down and maybe even a little greasy.
So make sure you rub the product in between your fingers/hands before applying it to your hair.

Thinks like hair masques are best to use on the end of your hair working your way up but leaving the roots alone.
There's one Olive hair masque made by Regis that I'm using right now. It's WONDERFUL to help control frizz and makes it very soft and sleak.

Daily conditioner anything from any brand like pantene, suave, aussie you name it, are fine to use through out all of your hair from root to tip as long as you rinse it out very very well. Any remaining soap or daily conditioner residue can also leave your hair looking weighed down.

I've noticed that a lot of "shine" sprays will weigh hair down a little. So at times I've used them to my advantage.
I will spray it on the sides/back and tips of my hair but leaving the top alone, so the overall volume of my hair from root to tip will even out a little further.

If you have a bad frizz or slit ends problem do your best to treat your hair gently and with respect and eat good foods. Frizz and bad split ends can make it appear as if their is even more volume to your hair.

Have you tried layering your hair on the underside? It will take some weight off the top, but may help to prevent that bell shape. Usually people do that cut to make their hair not appear so thick.
I have done that several times in the past. The only down side is keeping the shorter pieces of fly away under control.
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

I'm used to fly away pieces :D with this hair it's either live with them or despair. I dont think layering on the underside has been tried yet, that might work!

And I should've known about any after-washing products weighing it down  It figures! I use a detangling spray from Body Shop to brush my hair while it's still wet. I'll try experimenting without it and post the results :)
