Banding In Canon 5D

I put the image below in for a exercise in spotting problems and the first one brought to my attention was one I hadn't caught myself. Banding at 1600 ISO. Now I had seen that before under certain low light conditions at 3200 ISO, but was shocked to see it show up at 1600.

I just spent an hour trying to get the camera, the the same lens and different lenses reported to have the problem, to band from ISO 800 to 3200 and all increments between and can't make it duplicate last night's problem.

At some sites I found theories that the camera mirror might be shaking the sensor. I'll try the series again tomorrow shooting vertically, since that's the way the flawed image was shot. But I'm wondering if there is any other Canon shooter here who has encountered the same problem. Supposedly Canon has a part fix that helps with some lenses, but surely it's not the Lenses.

I commented n this photo in another thread. Presumably the banding you refer to is the apparent change in colour balance diagonally across the face from upper ear to lower chin? My own suggestion would be a difference in colour balance of light above the face and below. The barker band would suggest a brown floor or table reflecting light to the lower facial area whilst the direct light illuminates the rest of the face. Such colour balance problems were always faced in film days and cameras were generally the last thing to blame. We used to run into problem with different shutter types and moving objects but colour was always difficult and I regret always will be. No camera can emulate the adaptation of the brain-eye combination to smooth out dreadful colour balance problems, and it will be a long time before they will.

Nope.

I didn't catch this one myself. The camera was set on spot meter and the face is nicely exposed. If you examine the area to the front of the right cheek--the white area running from there down toward the floor behind her arm--you see vertical lines, thin dark line and wider white lines. These are basically the array of sensors, or something in the sensor, collecting the light incorrectly. It doesn't do it at all ISOs or with all lenses, apparently. Other shots in the series don't reflect it.

But it pops up sporadically in Canons and Nikons, especially the expensive models. There's a whole buch of threads of complaints you can find if you google Canon 5D banding or 1Dn banding.

However I agree with you that the general look of digital imagery is remarkable. I certainly won't be going back.

Charles on the forum I use (Canon Digital Photography Forum) I actually cannot remember if I saw a forum based on banding in the 5D. Saw a few on the 1DIIN. Most of the guys get their cameras either replaced or fixed by Canon. One person said they had to replace a "pcbassy.A2 board" no clue what that is but apparently fixed the problem on his camera. Some guys suggest firmware updates also solves the problem. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=300562
Do not know if this link will work or even show up but makes some interesting reading.

Thanks, I was two updates behind. I will test again this week

This useful guys.. thanks for the post. I've only experienced the problem once on my 5. I deleted the shot as the rest in the series were fine and I haven't had an issue with it since. I'll check the link and keep an eye on it.
