I'm of an older generation, so I may be out of it, but that conversation did not
treally sound like a professional recruitment effort to me.
I couldn't figure out if you were recruiting him or he was recruiting you. He
asked what you want to shoot, then asked clothing size like he was providing
outfits??? Several parks and a motel???
Maybe I am getting too old for this business...but that whole conversation
sounded just...wrong. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should  |

alike.
Digitization has made photography cheap and affordable and technology has given
even the lowests of amateurs thee ability to decently expose pictures without
training or thought.
The internet has given every girl who ever dreamed about being a model access to
audition before the world and have a chance at getting noticed. The former
clique of supermodels who worked, played and networked together are being
overrun by the sheer volume of newcomers.
We are all pioneers of the edge of a frontier. The rules for this new internet
medium have not been written yet. The new paragidm has yet to coalese. And no
one yet knows what permanent form the new industry will take.
Until then we have some of the old rules to guide us that can be adopted and
molded to fit.
If a photographer contacts you for paid work or TFP/TFCD, he must have a plan in
place already for what he wants/needs to shoot. If the photograper cannot tell
you the details of the shoot, bet your bottom dollar that the tog was attracted
by a pretty face and body and is motivated solely by a desire to see you in
person. Most desire is innocent of intent to harm, a small percentage is not. Do
you want to risk running across that small percentage? And alone?
If a photographer asks you to pay for a shoot, there is nothing necessarily
wrong, incidious or scammish about the solicitation. In this instance, the
photographer is asking you for your business, the same way a portrait studio in
the mall might. It is up to you whether or not you feel that a photographer's
work is good enough, or important enough to you, that you would want to spend
money to have that tog's work among your credits.
If a photographer is pitching you for your business, that tog had better present
like an advertisement not as a buddy-buddy, chummy, chummy conversation. Yes, it
is OK to chat with togs and become internet friends with them. But there should
be a dividing line between when we are talking casually and when we are talking
business. Be mature enough and wise enough to keep the two separate. If I want
to sell you my service, I should come straight out with all the details and the
bottom line one time without the model having to ask a lot of basic questions.
The information should all be there in the initial pitch. The model too should
know what exactly it is he/she wants out of the shoot and clearly express this
to the photographer. This way the photographer knows what you are buying and can
do a better job of presenting you with a quality product.
There are a lot of models and photographers who have not the slightest idea how
to make money in the business. They are flopping about in the ocean, just barely
treading water. And because neither can swim vey well, they are all reaching out
and grabbing hold of each other hoping to find the one person who either knows
how to swim or can show them how to swim. It is almost canabalistic. At the very
least it is akin to what we call in the newspaper industy, incest.
In a newspaper, incest is when a newspaper makes the news by reporting on its
own staff. I might define incest in the modeling industry as work without a
commercial intent. Commercial intent can mean art display, article,
advertisment, promotional, etc. It means when a third party is involved
with paying for the work.
I only take pictures when someone or something is paying me. I don't even shoot
to make art. Every photo I take with a model has an immediate publishing
purpose. This is just my preference. There are people who shoot for a hobby,
hoping to create art. Art that others can love, appreciate and buy.
But this current trend of shooting for portfolio/experience is troubling.
Photographers are not so much apprenticing with masters anymore as picking up a
camera with little or no experience and trying to gain that experience while
already calling themselves photographers. Models are doing the same thing too.
There is such a deluge of both that they have no choice but to get together,
shooting TFP/TFCD for years. Millions of pictures that are going nowhere because
they were not taken with a thrid party client already lined up.
Incest.
It will be interesting to see who, if anyone, is the world's first internet
supermodel, forged by nothing except internet popularity. The webcam market has
already done it. A few big names were created a decade ago at the dawn of an
industry that catered to voyeurs. But they have melted away, drowned in a tidal
wave of copycats. So many in fact, that unlike the 1990s when major webcam stars
were at the top of your mind just like a good movie star or musician, you cannot
pick out a single world-popular web cam girl today. There are so many, and they
are all mediocre, just like the original girls were, incidentally. The shock
value wore off with use.
Which photographer will become the first to be in demand world-wide, solely
because of internet bookings and promotions? Is National Geographic or
Cosmopolitan yet scouring websites like these, seeking a photographer or model
for their publications? I believe that day will come, when the guys with money
search the internet for the best of the best. But that day is not here yet
because we do not have working rules for contact or for guaranteeing performance
that majpr industry can rely upon.
We have a ways to go. Until then, both sides should use common sense when
obtaining work and have a goal in mind as to what each shoot is and what you
intend for your work as a whole to do for you. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
