Az. It is a classical music station. I find it very relaxing, and it helps
balance a stressful work schedule as well as stimulate the mind.
once upon a time.

Broadcasting System. I particularly like The Diane Rehm Show, Science Fridays'
The Infinite Mind, Talk of the Nation and All Things Considered among their
intriguing documentary and editorial programs.
Not quite music on T.A.P. but heck...that's what does it for me! I tend to like
new age, soft rock, classical and light R&B, but not really a lot of choice here
in the land of reggae and calypso. Gotta get satellite radio next week. Expand
my options. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

What exactly is the best beer with a light to medium body & a big foamin' head,

Or is it that cocktails are the number one? AND, if so, what flavor drink is the

I love your collection of genres...even the ones with reggae...I think there's a
certain taunt from hearing the sound of the steel drums!
But I s'pose over exposure could tire one out of a daily dose of island

I suspect that's why satellite is a stellar variety...I think you'll enjoy
it!

ID: 182744 Posts: 1748 | Date: 2007-07-07 13:04 Oohh! Beer on tap? Nope. We like bottles. Beer on tap you have to leave the
glass in the bar. Not so good for liming and stuff. Nah. We gotta have a beer
you can walk around with, drive and dash from bar to bar, party to party with.
So beer on tap won't fly! We do the 'grab and go thing'.
Drinking and driving, drinking and walking, drinking and
anything is still legal here. Last place in the nation where
you're free to drink as you want! Viva la liberte! Drink and drive, OK. Drink
while drunk....BIG no no!!! What is so great is to be at the airport when the
taxi drivers cram all the tourists into the vans. Then the taxi driver gets in
the driver's seat, pops open a beer and starts drinking. Big laugh watching all
the tourists eyes pop out of their heads! You see them looking around for
another taxi to get in, but all of them are drinking something or the other.
Funny as heck watching their consternation. But no worry...we've never dumped a
van load of tourists over a cliff yet...bad for bidniz!
So...the cute people like Coors Lite, Corona or Miller Genuine Draft. The
regular people will do Heineken Beer and Presidente Beer (great beer from the
Dominican Republic). The Macho people will do Elephant Beer. Elephant beer has
like three time the alcohol of other beers. Presidente has like two times.
Heineken in the Virgin Islands isn't the watered down stuff allowed for import
to the U.S. mainland. We get it full strength straight out of Holland, the way
it was meant to be. Aaaahhh!!!
Biggest seller here is either our local rums...up to 151 proof, many with
delightful fruit flavors or Hennessey. We drink that straight.
Oh...and prep yourself if you visit. We don't mix like stateside. I was
bartending for my father from when I was in second grade. It wasn't until I was
stateside and 22 years old that I had ever heard the word finger used for
drinks. I was at a bar and ordered a shot. Bartender....cute lady and quite
happily active horizontally ...asked me how many fingers. I looked at her, looked at my
hand, and said with a puzzled expression: 10. She laughed politely and asked me
again. She politely explained while looking at me like the retarded kid drooling
in the back of the classroom about how a finger was a unit of measure.
"Oh," I exclaimed and visualized in my head how high a shot was and promptly
told her: "Four fingers, please." My face was deadpan but I knew something was
wrong because she looked at me with that look people give you when they are
trying to figure out if you made a funny and wondering how come they didn't get
the joke. "What?" I asked.
"Shots don't come in four fingers."
"Oh. How many can I get?"
"Two at a time."
"That's no fun."
She smiled graciously and turned to get the drink. When she turned back I saw
the cutest, tiniest little glass I had ever seen in my life!
"You're kidding, right?"
"Ummm? About what?"
"Why the tiny glass?"
"You don't drink much, do you?"
"All my life, why?"
"Don't kid a kidder, baby. I can tell you're not a drinker. You don't know what
a finger is and you don't know what a shot glass is. Come on. Look...handle the
shot and we'll see if you need another."
I looked at her. Sighing. Cause she really was very pretty and I wasn't making
that good of an impression and, well, so many macho points lost cause she thinks
I don't drink, but you can't score those points back by bragging that you can
drink. SO I wrote her off and decided I'd spend a lonely night in the hotel
room.
So I slapped back the drink and reached for my wallet asking her what the tab
was in the same breath.
"You didn't wait for the chaser."
"Don't use 'em. Changes the taste."
She eyed me.
"Want another?"
"Well, yeah, since you serve little baby-sized drinks at this bar."
Well, two shots later she decided she would mix me one of her house specialties.
Not bad. I offered to buy her a drink, one of my creations from back home.
Yeah...things hit off from there. West Indians invented rum. Grew up on it,
literally, as children. No one drinks us under the table.
Drinks here come in 10 and 12 ounce cups and are 3/4 alcohol, 1/4 mixer and ice.
Be forewarned! We give tourists coming off the planes and ships a glass of free
rum punch when they arrive. Tastes like a very thick, sweet, exotic punch...and
has the equivalent alcohol content of three stateside mixed drinks.
Inhibitions...OUT the window!
Then we jam the steelband, turn up the radio hit the heavy calypso beat or the
mellowness of reggae. Radio stations lull them into our Lala Land Paradise.
Calypso music while drunk on rum, soaking in the sun and splashing in the sea
works better than any spa, night club or convalescent home to relax, revive, and
resuscitate you. We don't need no Viagra! Pernod, coconut water and sea moss
mixed with De B-E-A-T take you to the moon and let ladies see the stars.
Not much room for Marvin Gaye, the Drifters and the Platters. Oh, we know them,
but that's for late at night with someone special. Elsewise, Let de music
play, let the riddim beat, beat. Play you muddah, play you fahdah, see de riddim
sweet sweet. You know you like de beat, da way you want her, so tell her dat you
sweet, sweet, and play her like the beat, beat. You want her, you want her
to...play de music. Play the music. Play de melody! You know you want to meet
her. You know you want to greet her. So play it, play it, play de music
beat! ...just a little calypso classic lyrics from the late sixties. Want it
on CD, DARNIT!!!! Still once in a rare while on the radio, never often enough!
We need it on T.A.P. even if our beer isn't! Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
