when that fad came up, people just kept on saying that I am EMO. What's up with

minds want to know! Without any further knowledge I am confined to the EMO I
know which is an Oil Company based in Ireland and, from what I know of oil

Well, we live in a world where people feel more comfortable labeling and
categorizing people into easily identifiable groups. With our prejudicial
tendencies to generalize and stereotype, we group judge people racially,
ethnically, by trends, styles, looks and appearances without ever getting to
know the individual. Sometimes appearances give us warning signs about people
and give us an opportunity to decide whether or not to associate with them.
Unfortunately sometimes trends catch on within subcultures that then reflect
upon a person who practiced that trend before it became trendy. And suddenly,
people believe you are part of that trend, for good or for bad.
One of my personal experiences was wearing baseball caps backwards or to the
side. This happens when I raise the camera to shoot (and most of my shooting is
outdoors in the beating sun) and the visor is in the way, so I sweep it to the
side. When the shoot is done, I rarely remember to bring the visor back forward.
I'd been doing this for years with no problem.
Then certain street gangs and punks started wearing baseball caps cocked to the
side and wear causing trouble in shopping malls in Baltimore. Several mall took
a zero tolerance policy against people displaying handkerchiefs or wearing
baseball caps cocked or backwards. Ignorant me, I walk into a mall and get asked
to leave because my cap was sideways! I straightened it and tried to walk on and
still they blocked me! Too late. They had already assumed I was a gangster.
But, don't worry. I got my shopping done. I do write law for a living, you know.
And people back down real fast when a government officer cites chapter and verse
of the U.S. Code and Constitution at them. 
So, EMO has copied your side bang. Well...just have to live with it or change
your hairstyle. You will be labeled and stereotyped and nothing you can do about
it. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
