Expressiveness

I was writing a reply to one model in response to her questions about some pictures she'd just added to her portfolio, and ended up writing much more general advice than advice specific to her, so I trimmed it out. However, I think it's useful, so for any models wanting to know what a photographer (well, what this photographer in particular) wants from models, here it is.

I find all too often that girls cannot smile naturally, or cannot express any specific emotion other than "bored". It's not always as easy as just "smile", as the expression has to look natural and has to convince the viewer of the intended emotion and even evoke the emotion in the viewer.

What I suggest is practising expressions in the mirror, maybe for 10 minutes at a time, two or three times a day, so they can be "pulled out" on demand during a photo shoot. To keep it looking "natural", try thinking of a time when you felt happy (or sad, or thoughtful, or concentrating, or whatever) so you can then recall that memory and feel the emotion again. That way, you can bring the expression through from your feelings and out through your eyes.

Also, try for different sorts of smiles (relaxed, happy, cute, cheeky, full-on "laugh" etc.).

Setting up a small digital camera on a mini-tripod is the way forward here: set it up so it's looking at you in a mirror, set it on self-timer and then strike the pose so it can take your picture. Remember to be looking into the camera and not at yourself in the mirror, though! Then you can review how they look and try other thoughts and other looks and you'll find that you'll quickly be able to produce any of a whole range of expressions whenever a photographer asks you.

thats some good advice lol!!!!ill have to start tryin that one

This advice was intended for those girls who can't smile - we already know that you can, Elizabeth! :D

I think with experience and practice, the model can pull out any poses or expressions.

Those who're new to the industry could really use some of your methods. Thanks!

That'd be cool! It's rather like acting, where you have to be able to project an emotion to the audience. It's just more common in commercial work that you'd need a smile than anything else, though I've seen "shocked" and "depressed" used to good effect, too.

I did have one girl trying to do a "mean" look, but she kept bursting out laughing whenever it was almost there, so it took ages to get the shot! :lol:

Thanks for advices :)
:cantlook::shocked:

wow amazing advice ....i always have a bit of trouble with that ...its either i smile too much or look like i am abt to punch someone ! ;)

Hahaha - that reminds me of one model I had who said that she had a similar problem whenever she tried to put on a sexy pout, but would end up looking pissed off instead :lol:
