all, you get a very early view of the weather.
The constellation Orion rotating up over the hill from the east.
Shot at 1:10 a.m. this morning through crystal clear skies.
No, Lucia!
This shot is not taken with the pocket cam. I whipped out the
trusty dusty tripod on the way home and mounted the old Canon 10D. 5 second
exposure at 800 ASA. 17mm-35mm wide angle zoom. Shot at 35mm. f/5.6. Used the
camera mounted flash set to full burst. Opted for its harsh wash rather than the
softer lighting of the side mount unit.
A small bit of noise from loss of reciprocity, but not enough to disturb the
brightness of the stars. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

it feel more like 80.
Had a friend helping me with the yard work today.
These are for Jennifer Barker who wants me to show her mongooses and iguanas
during our shoot next month. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

iguana shots, esp. liked the head-on mug profile. ...
(Got a pet name for that critter? --and was it a male or female?)
Now you must take over for Levar Burton, who used to do Reading Rainbow TV
series--What was "Iggy" the 'model's' comp for the photo shoots?>--A diamond
collar?
BTW:. Ever take a picture of a Manatee, while out boating in the Caribbean
Sea?
Shouldn't be too hard to capture as they are slow moving, & since I heard
they're shallow plant feeders. [Not to be confused with the Dugongs, which have
a fork tail...Of course, that would be spotting a stray swimmer -- Most unlikely to
advance to your territory. ]
From what I gathered, Indigenous Tribal Caribbean people used to use their meat
on Fridays, as a Catholic substitute for regular meat. Interesting historical
menu... [Was Christopher Columbus' influence to blame?-- ,
or the peoples' pre-existing frugality for using what was a considerable large
amount of meat, readily available due to accessibility? ]
Here's where the old adage comes into effect:."Waste Not, Want Not"...The skins
were used for shoes & canoes, as well.
CLEARLY a PETA classification for a whopping "No-No"!
[I guess I can catch ya at the Forum...anyway. ]'Hair' TODAY, (Cy) .:. NET=---> Tomorrow! |

ID: 182744 Posts: 1795 | Date: 2007-10-21 15:05 Thanks! Too many iguanas around to name. I just call them Larry, Curly and Moe
as I feel like. They look at me like I am crazy. Intelligent buggers, then!
Iggies eat Twiggies and wouldn't know what to do with a diamond collar.
No manatees in the Caribbean. They need fresh to brackish water, not our salt.
Once in a while...like only twice in my lifetime, a manatee will stray down into
the Caribbean sea. Last one found here was air lifted emergency to Puerto Rico,
treated for exhaustion and dehydration, then given an all-expense paid charter
flight back to Florida. The main clue that would tell one that they cannot
survive in the Caribbean is that they are shallow plant feeders. Caribbean Sea
water is too clear...means little shallow plants to sustain life of that size
and magnitude. Perhaps, at a stretch, you might find a few manatee in
Cuba.
I too have heard the history of Christopher Columbus and how historians think
that his reports of mermaid sightings were actually Manatees draped in seaweed.
I have to doubt the historians grapple for a logical interpretation of
Christopher Columbus' journal entries about mermaids. We know what the Manatee
habitat area is and we know where Christopher Columbus went on his voyages and
it is difficult to fathom the two ever meeting. Christopher Columbus never got
near the U.S. mainland. The closest he got was the island of Hispaniola in the
area of the country now known as the Dominican Republic. Salt River, St. Croix,
Virgin Islands is the only spot on U.S. soil that Columbus tried to set foot on.
Our Carib Indians sent him packing right quick.
I used to live in Florida, though, so I do have shots of Manatees.
Waste not, want not. Contrary to conventional wisdom,
not a principle known to be practiced by Native
Americans. I have some knowledge of my ancestors. I am Arawak/Tiano Indian out
of the Caribbean on my fathers side and Seminole Indian, descended from both the
Georgia Indian Tribe and Apache Indian Tribe on my mother's side. My maternal
great grandmother was 100% Indian and used to talk to me about the past ways and
especially how, when Indians had to retreat to Florida, where they had never
lived before, how escaped slaves who were already there, taught them how to live
in the swamps.
On the Caribbean side, my paternal grandmother was one of the culture bearers
who kept some Arawak traditions alive and, to this day, my family still enters
the longest lasting troop in the annual Carnival parade called the Traditional
Indians. So, I know a bit about their ways.
Indians were not conservationists. In fact, most of their hunting and living
methods were extremely damaging to the environment and caused the extinction of
many species. Indian tribes were pretty much nomadic for, after laying waste to
an area, they had to move on to find more food and allow the area to recover,
coming back to it years later. This practice was widespread on both the mainland
and throughout the Caribbean where Indians commonly moved from island to island
in wood carved canoes...not animal skin. There are no animals on Caribbean
islands large enough to produce skins for canoe making. Yes, such animals exist
now, (deer and cattle) but they were brought over from Europe.
It is modern man who practices not wasting any part of the animal, not ancient
man. Capitalism. Find a way to sell everything, throw out nothing because you
are throwing out money. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

bright clear skies peppered with ugly grey clouds and scattered
cold, ice cold, rain. Brrr! Try pouring concrete in
that! Yuck.
Scene is shot from the east side of St. Thomas looking out at some of our outer
keys in the near distance. To the right is the north edge of St. John and the
most distant island stretching all the way across to the left is part of the
United Kingdom...Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
I shot that because yesterday was U.S. Virgin Islands-British Virgin Islands
Friendship Day. It is an annual celebration held to commemorate our islands long
history together. Bunch of speeches by governors and prime ministers. Cultural
exchange of foods and crafts. Every other year held here, on alternate years the
celebrations are held in the British Virgin Islands. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

know how old, but it was here when I was born 43 years ago.
Bright day out but again, scattered showers expected by early evening. Gonna be
that way for the next week or so as we switch from Summer to Fall.

storage devices, so no D.C. pics yet. You'll get those as soon as I am to a
computer and upload access.
In the meantime, since I left Friday, in the Virgin Islands all has been gray. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
