I'm looking into going on one of his Workshops in October. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with him and his workshop. From what I understand, he is one of the top teachers in the Glamour industry.

Hey Carib. This is your neck of the woods right? Its on a private island 5 minutes from
St Thomas. Do you know anything about the workshop or the location.

I'd also be interested to know if you have any photo shoots on when I'm down and
if I'd be able to come by and watch you at work. The workshop is Oct 25th to 31st, so anytime before or after those dates would be really cool.

Mike

Hi, Mike:

Rolando Gomez is not a local photographer. He is also not a member of the Virgin Islands Professional Photographers Association.

He is, however, a very good professional photographer and instructor in the U.S. glamor industry. Gomez is also former high ranking military photographer. He was good enough that top generals requested his service and he is a combat veteran. He holds workshops across the nation and yes, his workshops are legitimate. He has a crew of models that he travels with and provide professional fodder for your camera lens.

He holds workshops in the Virgin Islands every three to four months. I don't blame him. We have the best natural outdoor studios in the world. :)

The island he works on is not a private island. I guess that point is minor. The island is called Water Island, part of the St. Thomas-St. John District, and sits in Crown Bay Harbor, St. Thomas. The island is about a square mile, is home to about a hundred people and has several gorgeous beaches and one semi-commercial harbor. The island was used as a defensive bastion during World War 2 and provided a shield for the huge Submarine Base located in Crown Bay. (You won't see the submarine base anymore...we turned it into a cruise ship dock.) The defensive fortifications, tunnels that run throughout Water Island and gun ports cut into the rock of the southern cliffs still exist. A portion of the tunnels have been converted into cisterns to store water for the island but can still be toured. From the 1950's through 1960's Water Island was used for testing chemical and biological weapons. After that it housed persons in the Federal Witness Protection Program. The island was run by the U.S. Department of Interior and not the Virgin Islands Government until about ten years ago. At that time, most of the island was turned over to Virgin Islands Government jurisdiction. 200 acres remained in federal government control while they searched for two pieces of ordinance that went missing from inventory over the decades of testing. They eventually found the shells on Honeymoon beach which caused quite the scandal since Virgin Islanders never knew that the U.S. Government was testing biological and chemical weapons in our area. When you get to Water Island you'll see why we were so upset...the island is just a few hundred yards distant from St. Thomas at its closest point.

But it is a beautiful island and has a high percentage natural habitat. A small ferry boat shuttles you back and forth from Crown Bay to Water Island. I believe you will enjoy yourself.

Let me know when you arrive on St. Thomas. I can take you to some very beautiful and picturesque locations on the island that visitors never get to see. Skip the tourist stuff. We'll have a good time.

Well...if the U.S. Army trusts him, I guess we'd better...or else! A guy with a camera who can hang around generals - he's gonna be top notch.

Karl, Thanks for all the useful info. I have gone ahead and registered for the workshop and I'm waiting to hear whether I got on, as they are limited to only 12 photogs. Thanks also for the offer to show me around the island. I would really like that. I'll make sure I leave a day free after the workshop, on the off chance you have some spare time. Failing that I'll rent some kind of vehicle and take a look around. It would be a shame to come all that way and not see the islands. Do you know of any nice and reasonably priced hotels in St Thomas ?
I'm really looking forward to the trip. Thanks Again, Mike
