My Experience.

Hi, fellow models out there. I just want to share my experience with you and get some advice from you all especially, the super models.
I joined my mother agency not too long ago. I filled thier form and submitted. Later, I was asked to get some pictures so I could be posted on their site. I took almost three months planning for a photshoot. After which I decided to do my shoot at Benin City because I was there during that period. I paid for a makeup artist who did a very beautiful job. I transported myself to MIKON studio at G.R.A. I met thier photog who told me the cost of the session after taking pictures of me. I did not have enough money so, I ran back to the bank to get more money. It's cost was 4500 naira.
When I paid her for the job, She allowed me view my pictures. My dears, thery were horrible. My lovely make up looked like butter smeared on my face. I didn't like it. She told me that if I wanted more pics, I should pay for another session.
I left there angry and submitted the pics though. My agency rejected the photos and asked me to meet their agent in Nigeria for a comprehensive photshoot. I told them I would get them myself. The cost of their shoot and make up was high.
Later, I met another photographer who gave me an outdoor shoot but, the photos were still rejected.
I had to take my time to search for a very good studio that would for once make me happy in Benin-city. My friend directed me to a studio ( Snap It! Studio). I saw one of their photos and I really liked it. So I went there with my make up, clothes, footwears, jewelries, etc.
I did a light make up myself and had a 2 hours' photo session for 2,500 naira. The pictures includes all those on my portfolio in Jurgita.com. The picture were very good that I asked them to print a 8" by 10" photo from the CD. Finally a good set of photos at an affordable price.
I submitted them and they were accepted!
I kept on pondering if it was worth all the stress, transport fares and money wasted. Well, I won't stop being determined till I get to the top of my modeling career! You all may now understand how much the responses I got from my first post( My profile) meant to me.
But, do I have to go through a lot of stress to get little things like this done? A simple photo session took me more than a month to get done. Is it always like this for every amateur? What do you all think?

Sorry for your experience.

As with anything else you do, you have to shop around. Get some word-of-mouth. See samples of work done.

The bright spot is that you got the final photo session for the cost of a fancy sit down lunch in the United States! A photographer here would go bankrupt at the cheap rate you got!

4500 naira = $35.65

2500 naira = $19.80

How much do you charge for modeling over there? If it is akin to the studio cost, I foresee a mad rush to get Nigerian models!
:cantlook: Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should

If you're planning to go for a photoshoot, you should look at their portfolio or sample pictures first. Not worth paying for lousy pictures, yeaH?

Good on the conversion i said the same thing when i saw how much she paid, on my first photo shoot i was asked to pay 15,000 Naira, it had to come out good and because of my knowledge of photo editing software i asked for the softcopies and i was asked to pay and extra 1,500 Naira. So girl consider your self lucky and just be greatful that the photographers were not worse.

so Carib thats kinda what i mean by a rough start.

All the Best

Well Grace i too went through a similar experience....I paid to have my makeup done and it was terrible to say the least ...My own daily makeup is so much better in comparison.. So just as u did i asked to have another session and lucky for me they did not ask me to pay again...I also ended up doing my own makeup.

To cut the story short as Carib and Dwayne have said it is really worth doing your homework before going to any agency...I didnt to begin with but i have learnt a very valuable lesson...

Its too bad that you had such a stressful start but as oluwaseun has said it could have been worse ...and think how better prepared you will be next time!

You not the only one gurl!
better luck next time,

Presciosa.

Thanks to you all for your replies and advice. I'm grateful!

well, it was all worth it, that's my answer, the pictures in your portfolio look great and it does baffle me sometimes, make up artists do lousy jobs most times, our daily make up is so much better!

some do artistic drawings on our face i believe cuz the make up can be horrible and they don't know when to do simple makeup, they just plaster on!

well kudos grace, you had it rough but i guess it's just the beginning, don't give up, with hard work and determination, you'll succeed.

Daphne.

Like has been said. You paid very little. Price goes with quality for the most part. Most of my work is not online as my site is being redeveloped but I usually show clients before booking. I however charge in the range of what Seun paid.
I work with M3 modelling agency and will reject any images from models that do not meet our requirements.

I'm glad things finally looked up for you.

Hi i read your story and i feel that its best to do it yourself, i've been lucky as my boyfriend is also a photograher and i can get all the pictures i need when i want them. i haven't yet been accepted by an angency but haven't long been modeling.

i wish you all the best in modeling and hope you get all the money lost in money earned by the big lot hehe

good luck sweetie
