What Is The Best Way To Protect Your Photos?

Sometimes I have this fear of getting my photos somewhere I wouldnt like to see them or rather see my pic somewhere without my consent. I know just like music one should have something like copyright. What's the procedure for this?

Like in my site which can be viewed by clicking 'main website' from my port, have tried to disable some commands just to protect copying of my images but am sure somehow someone can still copy them.

Water marks, digital signatures..just like Jurgita does in all images..how can I do that with my photos?

If you found your pictures in some 'not so good magazine', pictures which you only posted in Jurgita and most probably the pics were downloaded from here. what would be th best way to go about it?

< I know some pple will b like 'who wld b willin to use ur pics Lucia ? if u wouldnt someone else could...nway my main reason is to be informed.>

The safest way to display images online is from within a flash movie where the images are integrated into the movie and not read from a directory.
Any other method is prone to image theft. Disabling commands will not prevent someone from going directly to the image URL and copying it.
The legal protection subsequent to the theft varies from country to country I think.

i really want to know too i think im gona put a big nicole across my pictures or something haha :dunno:

Well ...sometimes th flashmovie is not safe either. eg th flashmovie have used on my site. the users of th same application can actually log in and view th pics n even download. <<but as for that mayb it is bcoz th service is for free:D>>

I'd like to know the legal protection of various contries as well

Actually I'd like to know about that too:dunno:

Lucia,
I think that the flash movie you're talking about probably reads the images from files in the directory, rather than images that are integrated into the movie itself.
You can easily place some wording on top of your images by using any image editing software, but that might also distract from you, as the subject of the image. As said before, if you add some text to a less conspicuous area of the image, it can still be cropped or removed by editing.

I've just taken a look at your web site. It doesn't use flash movies, just a book style with all your image URLs listed in the source code.
Although the site developer has tried to prevent people from 'right-clicking' on your images, this protection is easily circumvented, as I did to look at your image URLs.

Flash movie can be copied by print screen button. Watermark across the important part of the picture would give hard time.. but at the same time ruin the picture as well. Legal.. is costly.. and probably dependant on law of different countries. This has been discussed over and over but until now.. i don't see any total solution. Guess we just hafta live with it for now.

Owh forgot.. you might want to learn a thing or two on how to protect from photo stock sites.. like istockphoto. Might not be suitable for model portfolio.. but at least you can get ideas.

Adi we just cant resign so early..I think watermark is a nice idea. But I need to know how to put it...

Lucia,
I use JAlbum (free downloadable software) to create the gallery on my site. It comes with its own watermark feature. I have it set to put mjones.net on all the pics that it uses. I haven't looked into it much, the default is to put it bottom right, but you might be be able to vary the size and position. If watermark is all you are after then maybe you can use this. btw it creates the html page and the resized watermarked pic. You could just delete all the html and thumb nail folders if all you wanted was the pics.

face it you guys. as soon as you post something on the internet you have lost control of it. it's kinda like the gambling adage "don't bet what you can't afford to lose" the only way to protect your files is to make them so that nobody wants them, either by over compressing a jpeg or watermarking or otherwise spoiling the image. i don't know that i would be too worried though. there are so many images available on the internet of all types that the chances of anybody going through any effort to modify an image of yours is really slim.

Hey.. what about turning the photos into movie format. Then display them by playing the movie on your site. I used to have problem 'screen capturing' a movie.. at least Print Screen funtion on the keyboard will have problem. It will capture the movie frame (the player) but not the movie screen itself. There are few sofware that could turn pictures into movies without much downgrade of the pictures.
