Try Gimp. It's free have good support for scripts and plugins

Picasa is limited, but good for basic stuff and it is free. You won't find anything free even near to Photoshop's capabilities. Sorry :( Adobe Photoshop Elements is a great program if you don't need the more technical side of PS and with version 5 coming out, 4 should be pretty low-cost. You might try [*Link removed*] and see if you can find a trial version or free program you like. I've tried most programs on the market and that is my humble recommendation. Good luck!

use the GIMP, i'm all for Open Source Software :)


There are MANY MANY tutorials for the GIMP, and many of its functions are similar to Photoshop 7, CS2 and CS3, etc.

I don't know about you Retouching Inc, but I'm almost positive I can 'retouch' as well, if not better than you guys can =)

GIMP once again, hands down.
It is a powerful and free image editing proggie.
Lots of people try to get me to switch from ps to gimp.
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

Wow such competition here lol! Nothing wrong with a little self plug as William says though!
Perhaps we need to expand this forum by getting a picture example and allowing all photo professionals to show their work in enhancing that picture?
Just an idea!
I can provide a jewellery modelling shot if desired (Hey self plug lol) any enhancements appreciated!

I'm personally not interested in a competition.
What is comes down to is essentially just a matter of opinion.
What photo may win in a place like this, another one might win some where else.

What I do enjoy is a collaboration of effort in a piece.
I used to do this a lot with graphic design. You start a piece, give it to someone else to work on, send it to someone else so and and so forth until the last person completes the project.

It's amazing to see how well similar and opposite people alike can create art.
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

Back to the question. Most printers and scanners come with Elements or Paint Shop, so if you know anyone who has recently made such purchases, they may have an extra program disk with serial number free lying about.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!

Try photofiltre. This will take you to a free site that has all kinds of downloads once you download the initial program. You will need a zip file opening program to download the files for this program, but 30 bucks is well worth the cost when you consider the price of a photoshop program. This site is out of France, and many of the zip files are only in French, but a little practice will make perfect.
