The big boy came in today. Took a while to charge the battery. The following shots are all with a 50 f1.4 and fairly low speed in ambient light at 6400 ISO.

First up a slightly cropped full head. Local musician and boat captain.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Then a crop to the eye. This repeats what I did with the 40D, but the 6400 ISO gives results similar to the original 1D with 4 megapixels and 3200 ISO
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Just for the heck of it, I applied Neat Image to the eye shot:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Now for a uncropped shot at the Marina. Levels was used to correct color, medium sharpening in USM.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

You might wonder what 3200 is like. Color corrected and cropped to about a fourth of the whole image, light USM:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Wow a 1D III, very very cool camera  with most likely the best high ISO performance up to date in a digital SLR and a superfast frame rate. Congrats and hope you have lots of fun with that little beast. Canon rocks :muscle:
Regards
Deon

Really love the marina scene.

But Wow! That 6400 quality is impressive. Looks more like the 10D's 1600 on the first photo.
The second one, the eye crop seems similar to the 3200 on the 10D, but slightly cleaner. The perception difference between the near full frame and the crop-in makes me wonder if they are feathering pixel edges to make the noise less visible at 100%. Well. whatever tech they are doing, they are making it work superbly. 5 years to no noise at all? :dunno:

The reasons I never got a 1D in its original incarnation were two-fold. On the manufacturer part, I didn't find the dials comfortable to my hands. Yeah, seems trivial until you here reason two.

Cameras tend to have shorter life spans here. At the cost of the 1D, to have a 2 to 3 year lifespan was a stopping point. The organic parts of cameras have a rough time with our environment. That would be any plastic and rubber. They get eaten by microbes, and the salt air and high UV concentration combine to crack and crumble rubber and plastic. On St. Thomas you are never more than a mile from the ocean and with the constant trade winds, there is absolutely no way to guarantee keeping salt off or out. Then there is the rain forest environment. Moist. The thingies that eat plastic and rubber have a field day. Once the rubber seals are gone, mildew and fungus rush right in.

I will never forget doing a sunset photo shoot with a model from the states...her last day on the island...and with the camera to my eyes I watched mildew start on the edge of the lens and, within a couple seconds, grew to encompass almost half of the lens surface. This happens inside the lens. Sometimes happens inside the camera too!

That was a big factor for me in rejecting the 20 and 30 series from Canon - no interchangable mirror! When the silver coat gets eaten off, on the 10D I can flip in a new mirror. 40D brings that option back. Halleujah.

I keep large amounts of silica gel...like t he stuff you find packed originally with your camera to absorb moisture and humidity...and change the packets out every couple weeks because they absorb a lot of moisture inside the packets. That's moisture that would be hanging out in my camera bag and fostering nature.

I am still going to look at the 1D based upon what you have shown, Charles. Maybe I will just look lovingly at it, fondle it and get the store manager to let me take it out for a spin. Might take a look at the 1Ds too...21 million effective pixels? Drool city! But twice the cost.

So, Charles, you see my dilemma. $4,000 times 2 for no guarantee that in two years I won't be sending off for expensive, sometimes impossible repairs? Or $1200 times 2 for the 40D which will do the job to get me the shots I need for publishing but with images that I cannot push as far?

Did you know that the camera warranties exempt cameras bought for use in the Caribbean? Check it out. Look at the U.S. warranties for all the major camera makers. They know the cameras cannot take long-term tropical use and specifically exclude such!

I just say, ah well...the price for living in paradise.

Charles...you've traveled the world. Ever done the rain forest scene? If so...how did your equipment fare? Armor-All applied regularly with a lens tissue to the camera and lens body works pretty well. (Not on the glass though!) Silicon spray to all moving parts and can even wash salt residue from within the camera without harming the mirror or chip. (Apply the spray from a distance of at least 12 inches because the cold temperature of the carrier/propellant can hurt the chip. But silicon is non-conductive and the carrier does evaporate clean. Do wipe the mirror after, though.)
:cantlook: Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should

I had a 1D for about four years. I kept it in AC when I wasn't using it, but I took it to the beach, to the swamps, to humid gyms, and to events in the rain and it did OK. In the field, I kept it in a igloo cooler from the habit of doing that with film and film cameras if it was going to be sitting in the vehicle for long. Although I live two blocks from the ocean on a narrow peninsula--less than 100 yards from the estuary--I haven't really had a problem.

But, since I've been digital I probably haven't worked any of my equipment like I did when I was working with newspapers. You probably have yours in a more consistantly humid environment than I do. At least one major wind direction doesn't come off the ocean here. When I had to do a job during Bike Week when it was rainy and cold, I covered my 10D with a plastic cover, but the 1D and L lens performed flawlessly without protection. I understand the seals on this are improved and the newer Ls are also improved.

I'm fortunate in that my wife permits me an allowance so I can save for these toys. My usual freelance stuff has begun to dry up and now it seems more a avocation than a vocation.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

To continue with the 1D Mark III. It's Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach. Bikers and beer babes:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

There is also a hint of daredevilness in the air--or about to be:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Yet with an air of nonchalance about the whole gravity thing:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Finally, a flower shot, just to keep a constant value in my shots:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Guten Tag!
To the >eYeCON/Icon god Fellas:muscle::muscle::muscle:
Just stoppin' by to check in on two of the family's *gr8* Fotog GUYS...YAY!--
Is it any wonder you guys have such strong NECK muscles?
Don't you ever wish on long trips or extended shoots that advanced technology could give you guys a breaK IN THE (CAMERA) BulK ACTION?...Is there such thing as too much film on your hands? [Figuratively speaking, of course;) ]
Do each of you have a standard pre-calculated amount you carry for different shots ahead of time--And have you ever ran out & missed a favorite spontaneous shot that made you feel like 'temporarily blowing a fuse'?
[Kinda like the time my neighbor had his metal shed roof torn off & thrown up into some live telephone lines, during one heck of a nasty windstorm back in early 1990's--Nature's Heavy outdoor Drama~!]

Mr. Griffin:
LUV the eye candy--Both up in the air & on ground--Darn, maybe you missed your calling to shoot for NASA!--That'd be a challenger mission you could tackle...Or would that be considered to be an "84 Charlie" combat photographer's sideline strategy outside the war zone [JK], Charles:D
Canon & Marina =A super combo--For this type of nighttime scene--Is it true that Fast Film would've been used in low light situations before digital tech'?.
BTW.+.You're shot of beer fest makes me want to break out a German Pewter top stylish boars head stein-- & celebrate your newly founded gadget;.Ah > Craftsmanship--without Sears & seers!:lol:!

Deon:D Are you into the study of photomacography during MAGIC HOUR?

Any one of ya's used the trick of Vaseline on the lens to produce a hazy effect?
The things some people will try--huh...I can't say I've ventured that far, but what the heck...I guess some are ready to lubricate anything--What's next Love & Robots???:cantlook:

Karl, sweetie:)...What's your preferred watts for a photoflood?
Thought I'd congratulate you for your Agency of 2000+;):thumbup:
SORRY:( 2 that a Fun-GUY like you had to deal with fungi on the lens...Paradise is still good for two tickets--Just ask Eddie Money!;):D:lookdown:

Any1 like Italian Breche rose marble or would you prefer Bardiglio capella?
If photo shooting pillars:.GUYS...Due to masculine preference--I wonder if you three would choose the same type Marble mentioned below...
Keep in mind that the first is a mottled brown, white, & lavender; & the second is a gray W/ gray & black streaks...Which one with or without the model?

Pamper yourselves with a Tunica palmata--After the fine dine & spa--
Dang movies can tool the wardrobe & spark the imagination:shh: [ :) No Secret!]
A salute to the photo consuls on site, with sight, & still stylin' the profilin'!

THANXOX for the depth of field perception @ keeping us Air-BORN in cyber space!
COOL_OP
Whether it be :lips::lips: OR :muscle::muscle:. . ."TRUE BLUE" IS The GENE that fits ALL;)

On working days I carried up to four cameras, especially in the film era, when you needed a fast film or transparency or color and B&W or a 120 camera for large images.

If working now, three is all I would carry and they are all I'd need, covering wide angle to extreme telephoto--no heavy bag with a ton of accessories. Most days I just pick a lens and a camera and go see what I can find.

Shooting in the dark sans flash? Special film and/or special developing, tripod, fast and heavy lenses. Plus a light meter or two.

Being a gadget kind of guy, I always had filters just for such, but rarely used them. If I was doing the darkroom, I could always take away sharpness there or add effects--kind of like Photoshop now. Plus I would have hated having to clean grease off even filter glass.

You lost me on the marble, but I saw a lovely statue in the D'Orsay:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!
