the industry. These are animals born, bred and trained for temperament, ability
to follow sometimes complex instructions and can take cues to express emotions.
I do not know of any agency or major production company that would trust an
animal that does not come from a proved handler.
An animal in film has as demanding a task as any actor. Lines and cues must be
learned as well as positions, camera presence and actor interaction. The animal
cannot get rattled or nervous around fast moving equipment, strangers running
around, various noises and sudden, unexpected occurrences. Believe it or not,
things that would startle or upset a human being the animal has to be immune
to.
You see...animals bite. They crap and piss. They make noise when all should be
quiet on the set. They generally do all sorts of unimaginably disruptive things
when out of their comfort zone unless controlled by a very skilled and
experienced handler.
But, all may not be lost for you. Sometimes small local businesses that wish to
advertise on television may need animals but do not have the budget for a high
level production. These might be your best bet. Check out pet shops,
veterinarians, and the like for a start. Go as far as calling advertising
agencies for auditions. Hey...the worst they can say is no.
Get your pooch to keep outfits on for more than 5 to ten minutes. Otherwise you
will drive the Continuity man nuts for each take.
But before you do any of that, you need to get your dog some public experience.
Enter him in some dog shows and see how he takes commands and reacts to
crowds.
And lastly, remember to buy liability insurance. You nightmare will begin when
some unknown person on a set unintentionally aggravates your doggy and gets bit. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
