I Gave Myself A Canon G9 For Christmas

Yeah, I had to have a toy for Christmas:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Here's a friend for Karl's bird. No, not really. I like all animals and I understand some don't normally mix:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Another plantlife shot, this one is a little softer:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Finally, one of my first shots with a G9, using flash and in a mirror. There is a green focusing assist light that you can center on an eye or nose, makes Van Gogh stuff easy.
In fact, this is one of the best shots I have of me. But what photog has a lot of shots of himself?

Nice self portrait!!!

AHEM!!!

Shame, shame Mr. Griffin! And hear we are trying to get models to shot shooting themselves in the foot...sorry, I meant face...ah, maybe I meant mirror...oh, whatever! :D

Seriously, no comparison. Beautiful shot! (The exposure and composure, I mean, not necessarily the subject.) [We really need to get admin to put on a tongue sticking out smilely, no?]

I went out Monday to treat myself to some new equipment but alas, the store that gives me the best discounts, right on the cruise ship dock, got raided by tourists. :( I'll have to wait until next Tuesday when their trailer comes in.

We know the kids won't stop doing mirror shots, so maybe they'll see this and understand something of how it can be done.

What I was doing was testing the little camera out Christmas eve. I had been looking for a way to carry a camera on me when I go triking on my Trice-T. I even bought a shoulder/chest bag that carries a slr body and a 100-400 zoom, but on the trike it provides quite the forward view blockage, plus is a heck of a weight on my chest.

I didn't want to forsake quality, however, and the 12 megapixel pocket camera seems to be the answer. See below for a picture of my trike. It's been modified to a suspension rear since I first got it. This is a very versatile means of transport, will go on beach sand and down dirt trails as well as roadways. To do that meant making it slower on the road, but I can average 10 to 12 miles per hour as it sits in this shot taken this morning with the G9.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Whoa! Nice trike!

And I'd give Squiggitts better than even odds against a cat. He'll try talking and reasoning with he cat first. If that doesn't work he will fly to the nearest perch, hang upside down by on foot and curse the cat like a drunken sailor. And then for spite he will fly down and punch a hole with his beak in the cat's ear.

You know I was teasing about the self portrait. My guess is that many of the models here would increase their chances of getting gigs if their portraits were half as well done.

Well, I didn't go for the G9 when choosing my pocket camera. I went with the Olympus Stylus 760. You have already seen many of its photos in the daily weather report. Versatile little thing that comes very close to giving me full manual control.

One of the reasons I chose it was because it is waterproof to a depth of ten feet plus is has and underwater housing that lets it shoot at depths of 150 feet. I am giving the underwater housing its first test tomorrow on a ship wreck SCUBA dive. I am hoping it proves as valuable in picture quality as my old Nikonos. Advantages: The 760 can zoom under water; With a 2 gigabyte chip I can shoot a few hundred images as compared to a maximum of 36 with the Nikonos; While the fish is still in sight I can know whether or not I got the shot!

I will be diving The 'Cartanser Senior', a 190-foot World War II era freighter. An early morning dive with the wreck in 35 to 50 feet of water. So I will be able to do both natural light and flash shooting. Interestingly enough, the 760 underwater housing comes with an attachment for a slave flash. Hmmm...I have never slaved underwater. Always used wires. Well, I won;t slave this time either, not for a first shoot. But if I get good results I will strap on a slave rig for next weekend. See how three flashes work for a point and shoot!

My grand kids gave me a bad cold for Christmas. Bah, humbug! However we went to the zoo yesterday where I took this little family shot (Not g9 but 40D with 100-400 IS zoom).
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Whoa. How'd you get them to pose for you? That shot looks like a classic bronze statue at first. Great work. Great composure. Great lighting. I like!

I promised pictures of my underwater test yesterday of the Olympus 760. I must say it performed beyond my expectations. The shots are not the best as this was my first time using the camera and the housing. It will take a little getting used to, particularly in framing through an LCD view screen rather than a range finder window. And sunlight glare from above and the surrounding water gave me trouble seeing the screen even though the housing has a hood. I suppose I could fashion a tube.

And holding the housing steady is another issue. It doesn't have the grip points or weight of the Nikonos. However, that too can be gotten used to and the smaller frame lets me maneuver through smaller spaces.

The images are a bit contrasty, but I did remove a flash diffusion filter from the housing front. I know the kelvin of the flash but I had no specs on what the housing's diffusion filter does to that light. Because red light disappears fastest in water, some underwater light filters add red light back to the scene. But how much red is added? So, I opted to do without it for this shoot. Next shoot I will use the filter for comparison.

As with all underwater shooting, focus can be a problem as water motion drifts you back and forth. When shooting in a coral reef, there is nothing to anchor your body to. Any contact with a reef or fish brushes off the mucous coating which forms most sea life's immune defense. So setting foot down to stabilize oneself is irresponsible. Additionally, a lot of the mustard colored coral seen in the shots is something called Fire Coral. I will leave you to guess why it is named so.

Yesterday's shoot was about introducing my son to SCUBA diving and the world of underwater photography. He is a Marine Biology major so we also used the day as a sea life cataloging expedition. He stayed up all night classifying the various sea life we found and cross referencing them with known images. Curious thing about fish...the meta morph similar to frogs but with dozens of more stages. One fish can have dozens of shapes, configurations and color patterns throughout its life. So much so that many of the fish we eat and call by different names because they look different are really the same fish in different stages of growth or different stages of transition from male to female and back again. Some fish of different species look so exactly alike that it takes looking a minute or microscopic detail to accurately identify it.

Too much brain power needed for my poor head!

You got a G9, I gave my son and underwater camera for his upcoming birthday to help with his research.

Here he is on the right of the image. Gosh, I guess I need to get him a wet suit next. Water temp was about 60 degrees at the surface, 7 degrees colder 40 feet down.

And one of our SCUBA buddies.

More of the wreck.

These fish really are that blue!
:cantlook: Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should

More blue.
:cantlook: Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should

Softer blue. Focus drift.
:cantlook: Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should

So, in these last few shots you have also seen another problem with the 760. No manual aperture control. I have no control over depth of field so if something drifts a little between the fraction of a second of framing and the shutter release, focus is lost.
