There is not much I can tell you about where to submit without knowing the
genres of your writings.
To write creatively on a national scale you will definitely need an agent.
Unsolicited manuscripts to publishing houses rarely ever get read.
The first key to getting past the boiler room of letter openers and trash can
fillers is you must, must, must type your manuscript in the format required by
the company you are soliciting. This means a proper cover letter and a title
page. Some publishers ask for a one or two paragraph summary. Etc., etc.,
etc. Before submitting anything, find out the requirements of the
publisher.
There are many reference books that list most of the publishers of various
genres. In those books you will find contact information, the type of writing
needed and the required submission format. Any half decent book store will have
these writer's guides to publishing on the shelves.
If you get past the boiler room, a junior editor might pick your work up. That
editor will read two, maybe three, paragraphs at most in determining whether or
not your manuscript deserves further review.
You could also go the self publishing route...this is rarely successful.
My publishing company seeks mostly tourism related and historical articles. Most
of the stuff submitted really is pure garbage. No psychology, no depth, no feel
for the personality or life experience of the reader. This is the main reason
why most manuscripts get the brush off. Reading takes time. You have to catch
the editor's attention right away or you have no chance.
In spite of all this, the key to most writers' success is that they continually
submit, submit, submit. Even though they receive dozens or hundreds of rejection
letters, they continue to submit manuscripts to different publishers until
successful.
Locating a good agent who will promote you is almost as difficult as getting
through to a publisher. However, an agent who sees potential talent might take
you on, assist in honing your skills and also know exactly where to place your
work for consideration. Submission by an agent skips several preliminary steps
(like the boiler room and junior editors) because the publisher knows from past
experience that the agent's submissions are less likely to be crap.
If you allow me to review a few of your works I can give you a more refined
estimate of your chances and might be able to refer you to a few people if you
pass muster. Failing that and you show some promise, I could give you some
pointers and tips on how to improve your work.
The other thing you can do to get started in the writing profession is to seek
work at a newspaper or magazine as well as take courses at a university. And
read a lot. Read, read, read. Writers read!
Lastly, check your punctuation and grammar. Nothing sinks your chances more than
not knowing the English language. Perhaps it was simply because you were posting
to a forum, but your lead sentence here sucks as far as punctuation
capitalization and grammar are concerned. Ouch...the dangling participle is
hitting my head! And watch your tense.
So, give me a buzz through Email if you would like me to take a gander. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

can safely say there is not much of a market for poetry, although there is a
nice subculture of performance poets. Fiction, short stories, it can depend on
the genre. Articles on non-fiction subjects can often find a market.
Carib (Karl) offers good advice. Show us some of your writings. If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!

and participate whenever I can. Of late much of the stuff that gets performed is
simply rap without music and very often pretty poor copies of the real deal.
Everything is subordinated to the rhythm and standard English goes out the
window.
There was a a young boxer, who'd done some juvie jail time and talked (and
rapped) as if he had made his bones (killed someone). He was also a recent
convert to evangelistic Christianity (go figure) and he would be at every open
mike night at a certain club in Florida and try out his raps on an audience
primarily comprised of college students and more experienced poets. After a
while he began bugging the host to have him be the featured poet some night, but
the host finally told him that until he improved his work it wasn't going to
happen.
The kid blew up and cursed everyone out and generally made an ass of himself. At
the next meeting six or seven people showed up with poems or faux-raps,
including me.
Even the title is tongue-in-cheek:
A Bad Rap for Damian
I’m a tolerant dude
when I’m in the mood
give me poems rude
or blued
but never subdued
Be true to your self
leave nothing on the shelf
proud of your skills
brag about your kills
you miss the mark
cause you pissed in the dark
no longer good news
you got wet shoes
made the crowd snooze
what you covet
you lose
Some rap is craft
some rap is crap
If the words don’t flow
cause you don’t know
there’s more to rhyme
than bending a line
demanding respect
what do you expect
mumbling your sass
cause we won’t kiss your ass
You wanna be a poet monster
you don’t need a sponsor
to gain the spotlight
on a poetry open mike night
You do need truth and style
train your mind for a while
expand your horizons
forget about your shitty origins
and being a doggy imitation
do a little elevation
and create some originality
introduce some levity
Funny is more on the money
and sweetness for the honey
Rage in the ring
knockout at the bell ding
but here you need to sing
truth we all share every day
that our feet are clay
and our hearts long
for a minute of joy and hope
that’s the real dope
You wanna get off the rope
and fight your ego
Just so you know
It’s not all about you
everyone has it tough
Life is always rough
I’m through with this shit
you wanna be a feature creature
you gotta subordinate
your latent hate
leave preaching in the pulpit
and tolerate our diversity
celebrate our universiality
to become a one night hit
That’s the prize you know
after that where do you go
it ain’t ever what you expect
poets get no (M*****F******) respect

Can anyone tell me how i can get my writing published or registered? Tanya
Hey there Tanya! I will have to agree with carib above, breaking into the world
of song writing and getting published has got to be one of the hardest things,
yet if possible most lucractive things! Many suffer lives of hardship to gain
recognition!
I note that you have a Modeling Portfolio here and promote that via your page!
Well visual image is most important in any of the Talents areas, so if you are a
singer in addition? I would say that you should promote yourself as such and
give samples showing your visual image! If you don't want to be seen as a Singer
yet have song writing as one of your skills area, then I guess you have to
commit to either the modeling or the song writing as both are difficult to break
into and will demand your full commitment!
So many people out there have good levels of multi-talents yet without commiting
to one particular talent area you can be just like a powerful ship without a
rudder and your skills will not be recognisied! So it has to start somewhere!
Good luck in your choices and direction Tanya! |

Oh just a further note:
It's ironic that you live in Limmerick regarding poetry and
song writing! |
