Haha, no really; just thought would be fun to use that title.
Here is the deal, I am about to upgrade my main body but full frame is absolutely out of the question, i have nikon and canon gear so i am not die hard fan of either, but I know that with nikon i have way more chances of using my old manual lenses.
Having narrowed down my choices to the EOS 40D and the D300, my real question would be: is the compatability and image quality of the D300 really worth the extra £500? and, is the 40D a body that i won't be needing to change in the next three years?
Would be nice to hear from people who has actually used both cameras specially in low light environments

I wasn't aware there was a difference in the image quality. Are you referring to the image size ? I can't help with the comparison as I only have the 40D. From what I have read on many forums the main advantage of the D300 was that the screen was much better. It's the same size as the 40D (3 inches) but has something like 4 times the number of pixels. But you probably know all that stuff already.
Go Canon, Go Canon LOL. no seriously I hate all the C vs N stuff. They are both great cameras. Like Christians vs Muslims, if we could all just get along.

Personally I think Glass is more important than the body. Most bodies are pretty similar, well now that they all have dust prevention systems. So if I was faced with the same choice I would base my decision on which are the favourite lenses I own and who they are made by .
regards Mike

Check out Charles Griffin. He has a post here where he is testing out the Canon 40D. Might be a help to you. I do not know about anyone with experience with both. The good thing about Charles' pictures is that they are true field tests by an experienced photographer and not the slick company images which are shot in ideal circumstances.

So give a gander at his shots and see how that works for you.
:cantlook: Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should

Thanks for the referral, :muscle: I am a long time Canon user, including going through the horrible time when they dropped the FD mount for the EOS system. I still have one precious old film Canon F1 and a few FD lenses.

But I shot many frames with various Nikon, Pentax, Mamiya, Leica and Contax cameras over the years. I've had good friends who invested in Minolta equipment, now tied into Sony.

It's the shooter, not the equipment. But having said that, I would be an idiot if I didn't admit that there is a difference in body quality and in the perception of color through certain lenses. There is a reason that Canon and Nikon have remained on top among professionals--that is durability.

If you looked at my 40D pix, you can guess that I love the results with the camera, but if the picture gods send me into a hurricane or off to a sandbox somewhere (unlikely, but you never know) then I want one or two cameras with a single digit designation, be it D or F and 1 or 3.

These are built to take the storm.

My investment is in Canon lenses, so I'm not likely to switch at this late date, but I hear the Nikon results are good and the availability of their lenses is better than it used to be. Maybe I'll have a chance to try one out sometime since the Canon will also accept Nikon, Contax, Leica, etc lenses via manual adapters.

One might have to zone focus, stop down, set shutter speed and have to think through the shot, but one can use the best glass the world has to offer.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

I use a top of the range Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II pro-body and have several friends with "so called lesser" consumer- bodies that outshoot me on a regular base. As said much more important is the person behind the camera and then good glass just makes life so much easier. The 40D will be a sound investment. It is modern with all the latest tech advances in the camera world. Bodies will come and go but a good quality fast sharp lens is worth it's weight in gold.
Both Canon and Nikon is superb as is a few other makes. The main point to look for is what lenses, flashes and other accessories is available for these cameras. Both Canon and Nikon has a great range of lenses, external flashes and some important other accessories which makes them a sound choice for any serious photographer.
