[Carib Goodies: ...]
LOL. I had exactly the same thought. When trying to calculate the height of the
sun I drew an imaginary line from the shadow and the top of the palm. It was at
about a 45-50 degree angle. I then did the same for the hills and the angle was
much lower at around 30 degrees. It did confuse me but I put it down to the fact
that the hills on the mountains would cause a different shadow pattern due to
the angle of the slope. As long as the slope was steeper than the angle of the
sun then the slope would be in shadow.
As for the scenery I would never have guessed this was the US. I would have said
north Africa or Middle East. But that's mainly because I don't see any evidence
of signs or golden arches.
I drew the same ascension lines after your post. Confusing. Shows two differing
times of day and two different sun positions. Weird. A mirage finally captured
on camera?
But on St. Thomas my parents live in a valley with steep hills, some slopes
approaching 70 degrees. The easterly-westerly ranges to the south give that type
of shadow between 6 am through 11 pm. And we are further south. The further
north, te more elongated the shadows will be. No matter the time of day, though,
an isolated phenomenon like the palm trees, would have shadows casting slightly
northward in the northern hemisphere. The sun spends a lot f time south of the
east west line using a magnetic north.
I can sketch out a draft of solar inclinations a little later. Runnign short on
time right now.
I really would like to know what state that was. If in the U.S., money bet it is
the west or desert north-west - ignoring trying to position cardinal direction
from her statement that it is in the south. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

in the east nor did i ever indicate it was |

| Date: 2008-01-28 10:13 ok .. ok. i have officailly consulted my the timeline of photos i have from the
trip i went on (not as good as the journal, but not really sure where my journal
is). and i guess i was partially right.. but got the drought-ness confused.. we
had been in Arkensas just a few days prior.
The picture was officially taken just east of Sequioa National Park in
California. |

the only region in the United States officially in drought.
Parts of California are naturally very dry and other parts are desert. Mid to
north California is going through a period of reduced rainfall but does not
qualify for the rounded definition of drought which is precipitation of .001
inches or less in a 15 day period.
I did win my money bet that the location was west.

If you want to be a good photographer, you have to take your notes. Pros always
have a pad and pen handy. With digital cameras and Exif, people have gotten lazy
with the camera recording settings for them. But not location. Even so, many
digital cameras today allow you to make a voice notation for the image.
I hope that you can see from this situation how even minor misinformation can
create confusion. It can also call into question the credibility or reliability
of the photographer. A person who records and gives out information to the
public is a reporter. All photographers are record keepers and reporters.
We are looking forward to seeing more from you. You have made a great start.
(Now, can we see the same care and artistry demonstrated in your landscapes in
your modeling images, please?) Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

| Date: 2008-01-28 13:34 well thanks for the lesson on drought. i appreciate you sharing your knowledge
so in the future i can assure you i know so much about it now i will never get
it wrong.
prior to your lesson i knew nothing. . and i already know i have a bad memory.
in the futre i will be sure to make notes for photos i plan on using in my
portfolio.
also, if i choose attend college in the fall i may then have models in my
photos. but i am unsure as to what i am going to be doing. |

portfolio.
And you do not need to wait until fall and college to start shooting models. I
am certain there are people willing to TFI (Trade for Images) in your area. And
even if not...practice on your neighbors. Tell them that you are trying to learn
to take pictures. You will be surprised how many of them or their kids will
volunteer to pose for you, or if they have a picnic, yard party, birthday party
etc. ask you to take the pictures.
Go to sporting events and ask how to get admission to the press areas. Again,
let them know you are just learning and will not be using the pictures for
commercial purposes. Talk to the organizers of charity events in your area. They
always need pictures and often cannot afford to hire a full pro. Area fashion
shows. Mall events. Outdoor spectacles like parades, fairs and festivals.
Look around you with open eyes and you will find practice opportunities
everywhere. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

| Date: 2008-01-28 14:56 ya thats true. but i feel like i do need something better than a point a shoot
camera before i can really capture images to the best of my ability.
I also prefer scenery, and animals. i appreciate the worlds natural beauty more.
i willl most likely eventually begin to shoot models.
and i already discovered that i do not want to be a model. and that is why i am
looking more into photography because it is something i actually have a passion
for. however the site isnt allowing me to create a photographers profile. |

My cousin, Austin Walters, taught photography at a local high school in the
1980's. He required each student to bring a shoe box to class on the first day.
They each made their own pin hole camera. That's a shoe box, film taped inside
to one end and a small hole punched in the other end with a pen tip or wire.
Throughout the semester not only did the students shoot 35mm, but also were
required to take pictures with their shoe box.
I miss those days.
The point is good photography is how well you know how to manage light with the
equipment you have and how well your own artistry frames and creates the image.
You have astonished us with the images you have gotten from a pocket camera.
Yes, seek the better cameras, but do not let lack of equipment stop you from
doing the best work possible. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

|
|---|
| Date: 2008-01-29 10:14 the pin hole camera sounds so neat! that would be awesome to use! probably
difficult to shoot with but it would be neat to see how the images come out!
Thank you very much for the encouragement. i will continue to do my best with
what i have . and i can assure you i will never stop taking photos! |

to--just keep putting up pictures for critique--until you have a portfolio that
makes us old guys jealous. Then you go for broke! If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try! |

HERE
Make us old guys jealous? I think I am already there. She does
seem to have a natural knack for it.
What say we tell here she cannot join the Fraternal Brotherhood of Old and
Frumpy Togs (FBOFT) until she builds and shoots with her own film-style pin hole
camera?
That would be a fun initiation.
Not that I am sadistic or anything, but it was always fun to initiate wannabees
like that. Send them outdoors wit their camera. Almost impossible to get a shot
unless you really know your light and your film. Some have light leaks in their
boxes. Some didn,t punch the hole right. And even with all those factors in
place, a person has no true idea of their film capabilities until they try
dozens of times to make a presentable image.
After the first year, I understood my cousin's reasoning in putting the class
through that. He was weeding out those who did not have the patience or attitude
for photography.
That is where inexpensive digital photography has messed things up. We see a
deluge of images by photographers today who never took the time to think about
their shot, to compose their image, to use the light and film to their full
capability to make a shot that is not a waste of film and money. 99% of young
photographers I see today are spray with no pray because they can keep shooting
until their viewer says "Good Shot"!
The secondary point of the show box lesson was to teach the students to know the
capabilities of the equipment and to exploit its strong points while being
cognizant of its weaknesses. Different cameras, different lenses, different
films...how will the true photo artist use their tools to make an effective
print? Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

As difficult as this pin hole camera initiation sounds.. if i had any clue how
to do it .. i think it would be fun to try! might turn out to be more
frustrating than i expected.. but hey ive always liked a challenge! |

me. i got this photo of him and then decided it was probably best to leave him
alone |
|---|
|
|---|
| Date: 2008-02-04 15:30 i also just realized how slanted the pelican pictures are.. gah! |

|

ID: 182744 Posts: 1748 | Date: 2008-02-04 16:43 You never truly know a pelican until you have had one chase you across a parking
lot. Those beaks HURT!
I also like to laugh a tourists faces when they are cooling out at the beach and
a pelican dives on a fish just a few feet away from them. The bird's impact with
the water sounds like a bomb going off beside you and the tourists jump and
scream while the pelican just sits calmly there arranging his fish in his mouth
and swallowing. Pelicans are a lot bigger floating right next to you than they
appear when you see them at a distance.
Nah...the pictures are not slanted...that is the curve of the earth! Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
