Child modeling scams are a huge problem. Countless nefarious operations prey on
the hopes of children and the gullibility of parents. A certain percentage of
parents are so flattered by these faux agencies that they are easily motivated
to shell out thousands of dollars in modeling classes and overpriced photos.
These "black sheep" agencies will never tell you the truth about your child or
about the modeling industry.
You want the truth: There is not much modeling work for children. According to a
report on the modeling industry by the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Business
Services, "The experts agree that anyone who suggests that you can make easy
money in commercials isn't being honest."

In fact, no modeling agency or agent can promise you work at all. The most they
can do is send you out on auditions, where you'll have to impress the directors
or the clients to get the work yourself. Then, and only then, should the agency
get paid a percentage of your paycheck. Never pay an agent or agency anything up
front -- ever.
Don't Fall for the Scams
How do you tell a legitimate agency from one that is trying to scam you? Here
are some flags:
*
A legitimate agency will never ask you for money -- never.
*
A legitimate agency will never sell you modeling classes.
*
A legitimate agency will never sell you photos -- never pay the agency for
photos, pay the photographer directly.
*
A legitimate agency will tend to give you a list of recommended photographers,
if ever, and they don't offer photographic services. Beware of agencies that
direct you to a specific photographer. They are probably getting a commission.
Don't Go To Modeling School
Going to Modeling School will not make you a model. Modeling schools make their
money with tuition. They won't turn people away. It's a conflict of interest.
"There's no way a modeling school can help you become a model," said Supermodel
Gia Carangi. "In all my years of modeling, I've never met a top model who came
through a modeling school. It's all a scam to get money out of innocent, young
girls."
Don't Get Professional Photos
Lara Bonomo, Teen Vogue Bookings Editor, says, "Do not, I repeat, do not spend
money on professional photographs until you have a reputable agency working with
you."
Do Be Persistent and Hit the Pavement
The best way to become a model is to find a legitimate agency to represent you.
To find an agent, go to the open casting calls at legitimate agencies. A cheaper
way to do it is to mail pictures to agencies. These can be snapshots -- you
don't need a professional modeling book until you have an agency helping you
find work.http://www.onemodelessencelimited.com |
