navigating the internal representation of oneself and the external presentation
to others, are there any hints/theories, that can assist in the expression of
the internal life! |

Huh? Who? uh, What?
Can you phrase that in English slightly less reminiscent of an Oxford professor
in an itchy tweed jacket?
One wonders whether you have an existentialist bent.
The self portrait is you. This is how you want to represent
yourself to the world. How do you want us to see you? Best face forward?
Emotions displayed or held in check? What is the purpose of the self portrait
and who will see it? Is it to be an honest portrayal of you or an image of you
that you want to use to convince people of something?
The average hand held web/pocket cam shot always seems to shout at me: "This is
the best I can do. Do you want me?" In those pictures the individual is trying
to sell themselves, basically just in a rush to let the world see what they look
like. But how well do they capture the attention? Anyone can do them and anyone
does do them.
If you do a proper self portrait it is because you want full artist control over
how the world sees you. You also want to make an image that people will stop at.
An image that will command attention.
If you choose to show emotion in such images, my opinion is that showing a
strong emotion captures the viewer's attention best. For neutral shots,
highlighting certain features can capture one's attention. If older, a good
contrast to show off age lines (yes, tis true). If your eyes are your strongest
asset, you may want to make them the focal point of the image.
Basically, find some element of yourself that stands out and then exploit it
using the style of shooting that best emphasizes that quality. Make it fresh,
inviting, different, yet conservative. Making a self portrait that gets lost in
the crowd is sort of oxymoronic, don't you think? Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

the main psychology of self portrait is to take nice pic of yourself.
This photo must be you, and it must shout that it is you.
Search the web to find some ideas for self portrait and you will find some for
sure.
