love the work you did.
I especially like how you got the fluorescents to pop on Camey. Taking advantage
of our strong UV light there! Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

When do you do your photoshoots ? I mean very early in the morning or time
doesn't matter ?
I just ask because I can only imagine the crowd gathered to watch this
photoshoot. |

Nah, you cannot imagine. Here you had better be somewhere isolated like some of
our secluded, hard to reach beaches or on someone's estate to get away with
doing nudes. Other than that you do not see much of a crowd gathering around
photoshoots. Some gawking as people go about their business and of course, the
few busy bodies who stop and want to ask questions.
But I will let Mike tell you more himself about his experience here. I know he
did at least two islands..Water Island and St. Thomas. I see our central park in
the town of Charlotte Amalie, Emancipation Gardens and at least two
beaches...Dorothea for certain and I believe the other might be Bolongo Bay,
although I am not too certain on the last. It could also be Emerald Beach or
even Honeymoon beach.
What's the verdict, Mike? Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

You are almost on target. We shot at Emancipation Garden, Downtown Charlotte
Amalie, Dorothea and Emerald Beach. You really know the island, I must add!!
Mike did a great job and he is such a fun, professional photographer to work
with. We ( Camey, Lekia and myself) really gave him a run for his money....2
days of shooting, almost non-stop (we did stop to eat and take some air).
He is somewhat like you, in terms of the professionalism he brings to the shoot.
The girls had fun working with him and cannot wait for him to take residence in
the Virgin Islands. Then we will have all the pros for ourselves (Yeahhh!!! just
being a bit selfish) |

Both Bolongo and Emerald beach have a couple of their structures in common, but
Bolongo has the dingy dock.
I am still certain some of the shots he took with the stateside girls were on or
near Honeymoon beach. It has been almost a decade since I strolled that
beach.
Know the island, Vern? I can name and have photographed on all 87 beaches of St.
Thomas, the 68 on St. John and five on Water Island.
I shall have to get you and your two friends out on a speed boat one weekend
soon and show you some of the nicely isolated beaches. I suspect you will be
surprised. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

Well Mike your photos are really great and your models seemed to love working
with you which Im sure is a key factor in any photo shoot and especially if you
are as fun and as professional as they say you are.
Good on you and excellent work, you can see that you love what you do and are
passionate about it. GET UP AND GO -

I try to do them at dawn and sunset. Not so much for crowd issues but the light
is better at that time of the day. Although when you work with Vern she makes
you work ALL DAY LONG
Most of the nude shots were taken on private property although some were taken
at a public beach that was empty. When I was in VI there had just been a
hurricane and access to this particular beach was flooded, we got through the
6inch deep lake in a golf cart. Actually some people arrived whilst the shoot
was going on but they were very kind and went to the other end of the beach.
The shots of Vern, Camey and Likea were shot throughout the day in public
locations. The only time that we had any crowd issues was the day 1 shoot at
Emerald beach where there were people watching from the balconies of the
adjacent hotel. It wasn't a real issue as they weren't shouting or anything.
There was one particular gentleman that approached us, he was a local
photographer that knew the models. He wanted to chat with them, but since the
light was fading fast and I was on a tight time line I politely asked him to
leave us alone as we had work to do and he was slowing the progress. He left. |

What's the verdict, Mike?
Stephanie, Jeny, Nikki, Devon, Tess and Laura were shot at a private residence
on Water Island.
Tess and Devon were also shot on Honeymoon beach a public beach also on water
island
Vern and Camey had a shoot at Emerald Beach which is a public beach on day 1
Then we did a couple of locations in town. We did a shoot in an alley way which
had some awesome lighting. The models were sitting or standing on a wall and I
was sitting on the ground. There was a fair amount of pedestrian traffic which
made shooting difficult but it was worth it as we got some really good shots
with that light.
Vern
Camey
Likea
The rest of the day we shot at Dorothea Bay which was off the beaten track and
other than a few local residents was very private. |

Peter,
You are SO right. If the model is not comfortable working with the tog then it
is going to show in the final image. You could have the best location, a
beautiful model and great lighting but the eyes are going to tell the truth. Of
course you could get her to look away
It is very easy really, just be respectful and considerate. |

Huh? We have not had a hurricane in the Virgin Islands since 1997. There was a
lot of rain and wind while you were here, but certainly not a hurricane. Just
before your arrival a hurricane formed from a thunderstorm that was over the
island, but it did not do that until it was out over the Atlantic to our north
and never touched the V.I. with hurricane force winds.
And even then, the proper name for a windstorm forming in the North Atlantic is
not "hurricane" but a Sub Tropical Cyclone. A hurricane is a Tropical Cyclone
forming in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean. When one forms in the tropical
Pacific, it is called a Typhoon. If a Typhoon crosses Mexico and into the Gulf,
it is then called a Hurricane and even gets a new name. Each ocean in the world
has Cyclones and each ocean and part of the ocean has a different designation
given the Topical Cyclone which in turn tells meteorologists what part of the
world to look for a particular Cyclone.
The Weather CHannel has so many people misinformed.
But anyways, we have not had cyclone force winds since 1997.
We had a ton of rain which was very normal weather when I was growing up. The
past couple years the V.I. has returned to the weather patterns of the 1960's
and 1970's. And boy, has it been cold. Brrrrrr.
The error is not your fault, Mike, I am certain you heard about the supposed
"hurricane" from stateside transplants. I have heard them telling people this
thinking to impress them and when I approach I always say: "Can you show me this
supposed hurricane on the weather service tracking map?" No, they cannot because
it did not happen.
Sorry. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

Huh?
What I was referring to was hurricane Noel. I wasn't sure what it was when it
crossed VI but it became a hurricane shortly thereafter. What it was wasn't
really relevant the point was it had rained a lot and access to the beach was
restricted.
From the national hurricane centre
[The tropical wave that played a role in the development of Noel departed the
west coast of Africa early on 16 October. During the next several days, the wave
moved westward across the eastern Atlantic without showing any signs of
organization. As the tropical wave approached the Lesser Antilles late on 22
October, it began to interact with a surface trough lying just north of the
Leeward Islands and an upper-level trough that extended southwestward from the
Atlantic into the eastern Caribbean Sea. As the wave interacted with these two
features, a broad surface low pressure area formed about 150 n mi east-northeast
of the northern Leeward Islands late on 23 October. The new surface low then
moved slowly westward and produced disorganized thunderstorm activity during the
next couple of days, while strong upper-level westerly winds inhibited further
development. The low turned west-southwestward on 25 October, moving over the
Virgin Islands and passing near the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico early the
next day.] |

 ID: 182744 Posts: 1589 | Date: 2008-02-10 19:22 Hi, Mike:
Yes, you are right that it is not really relevant to the discussion, except that
it was mentioned and your own National Hurricane Centre report states that it
was not a hurricane that moved over the Virgin Islands but a low pressure area
that produced disorganized thunderstorm activity activity during the
next couple of days, while strong upper-level westerly winds inhibited further
development. The low turned west-southwestward on October 25, moving over the
Virgin Islands...
A thunderstorm. Relevant simply because had there been a hurricane, you would
not have seen all that beautiful vegetation that formed the backdrop of so many
of your excellent shots. A hurricane, even a weak one, tears all the leaves off
of the trees leaving nothing but bare branches.
I just did not want people thinking you brought us a hurricane! We lose our
tourists to a rumor there will be not much of a VI Fashion Week for you to
photograph in October with Vern and all the lovely models who will be flying in
to pose for you.
I am jealous that you got to sit on beautiful water island with those gorgeous
models you guys tempted to the islands and the even prettier local ones who had
you all to themselves for two days. (Are you still sore??? Perfectionists, those
ladies (Vern, Camey, Lekia) are! Fun, cooperative and will wear you down with
their smiles!) Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

Vern...I wondered what all the raucous was around the island last night. Did you
all leave any buildings standing?
Say...when are you going to get Camey to join the site?
And Sunday morn...I need a couple of you. Saturday is shopping. Will call today.
I hope I don't interrupt your hangovers!
Mike: When are you going to turn pro? All that talent and it is just a hobby?

Oh don't go there !!!! Even the mention of the word could get me thrown off the
island quicker than an old fat guy on Survivor. Work permit rules (I'm expat)
prevent me from doing anything other than my stated occupation. I'm not even
allowed to do some things for free if a Bermudian could be paid for the same
activity. TFCD is okay (i think). I have emailed immigration several times to
clarify the rules but they never respond. Govt So until I
go home or somewhere else it will remain a hobby. |
