points.
here's a copy/paste of the credit system, if you don't wish to buy them, you
need to accumulate Activity points. and that could take forever to get one
credit
Every 200 points converts into 1 credit automatically. This means that you can
earn credits, upgrade memberships, read and send emails absolutely free.

so keep writing me and other photographers or models. in a way, it's good for
you too,
you're forming a network with other ppl in the business community you plan to
work in.

btw lewis, i noticed you're from humber. i had quite a few humber grads asked me
to help with their portfolio when i was managing RutherfordsAV and working with
top photogs in Ott-Hull ..Malak Karsh, John Evans, Ed Sherwood, etc) during the
90's.
even ended up appearing as a photographer in the Donald Sutherland Jeff Goldblum
movie "Threshold" while i was shooting headshots with the modeling agency that
was hired to gather extras for the movie shot at Ott Gen.
lots of humber grads end up in the capital, although not all end up in
photography.
you provide the character, and i will take care of the rest to capture your persona. |

Thanks so much for all the input and information and am really appreciated
I posted this because my credit is very slow, and I think the only thing I can
do is be patient and more active in this site.
I graduated in 05 and know not many colleagues can work in the field not because
they are not good, but just the business is very competitive! Even I graduated
with the first honor but its really tough in HK! I'm very disappointed that
they're not looking your work but price and connection!
Best regards,
Lewis Lam

so wonderful to receive your response.
the things in photography is not to stop practising your skill.
i graduated in arts a long time ago( when dinosaurs roamed the earth ..just
joking),
and in the late 80's i graduated from NYI. i moved to Ottawa but i didn't do
fashion works,etc.. i did photo journalism, managed a major national wide
professional photo and AV store that supplies equipment and films, etc to
established photographers in the capital. that was how i got the same advice
from these photographers: KEEP WORKING.
i did freelance in everything, shot sports, wrote articles , submitted photo
essay to weeklies, and all these little things helped to pay for films and more
equipment. i shot with 35mm, 21/4, 4 x 5. so as you know, films were expensive
during the time before digital came.
i also taught and gave seminars as a manager with the AV store i managed. even
worked in camera repair, retouching with an excellent retoucher, travelled all
across my country to work and shoot on spec.
the point here is, don't just work in fashion only. not many
artists/craftsmen/etc.., at the start of their career, can earn a living just
doing what they enjoy, even if they very good at that.
it takes time to develop a reputation.
GOOD LUCK, you've only started. 2005 from humber.
that's still a long way to go. don't give up, but even more importantly, keep
working.
shoot a lot, make it a reason to shoot for fun.. not just for money. LEARN TO
LOVE BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER. like great musicians, they live for music. that's the
same for photographers.(ansel adams, richard avedon, diane arbus, eugene
smith,henri cartier bresson,karsh,etc).
shoot to master your skills, develop your style, and add photoshop to your skill
too.
you have a wonderful day Lewis.
P.S.
i'm sorry for taking again so much of your space here.
if you prefer, email me and we can talk some more directly.
you know my sites.you provide the character, and i will take care of the rest to capture your persona. |

Its indeed hard for fresh photographers to make in in HK. The commercial market
in HK is dominated by art directors and fashion stylists. It would be advisable
for you to seek out a long term relationship with either a good art director or
fashion stylist.
Once you have established such a contact, you can proceed to try for the
editorials that comes along. Be prepared to be paid peanuts for those but it
will do well for your reputation and folio. Try for the tech based magazines if
you can. They have tons of contacts to major camera, phone and gadget brands and
is the most lucrative advertorial segment to focus on. From advertorials, you
can get the big break if your works are considered better than the brands own
commercial. I have many friends whose advertorials in tech based/fashion
magazines have went on to replace the brands regional advertisements (rate
increased from USD$2k to USD$20k due to loading) .
Hope this will help you. Yes its all about connection in our part of the world.
Get to know the fashion and tech people, it will help in the long run.
Cheers,
Tuck |

Tuck
well said Tuck,
the dominance of the market by art directors is not a monopoly just in HK, it's
worldwide.
photographers only do the shooting, but the art directors are the ones who do
the hiring...models, designers,advertising,etc.
so we all have to understand what they are looking for. it 's not art they
want.
art does not equal sales. we do the artistry for ourselves, when we work for
others, we shoot the way they ask us to.
it's a business product. to stay alive, we have to be able to deliver the
products they are asking us , the photographers, designers,etc... to supply.
once again Tuck, well said. you provide the character, and i will take care of the rest to capture your persona. |

I know and understand these but the point is the first step is so hard to
getting in!
If I knock the agencies doors, whom should I ask for in order to present my work
to?
What about the payment of the job? I've lost some jobs from other companies
already (not agencies)
because my quote is too high. I don't know much about model fee, and when I ask
from model agencies, they're alway so expensive, and even higher than my rate a
lot. Also, I don't have a studio, so need to rent one, that's another cost for
me in terms of the quote that pushing me to have a higher quote than others.

Thank you all again with all the valuable comments
B. regards,
Lewis |
