Yes, I went and got the beast. Somehow, within the first two days managed to bend a pin in the CF card slot. Fortunately, I'm handy with small tools (no jokes, please) and bent it back. Scary, but if I had to send it in, Canon service is phenomenal. The 5D mirror was fixed within a week and I wasn't charged a cent. The 1D Mark III (with the the reported mechanical and software glitch resulting in a recall) went in and came back in seven days with Canon paying shipping both ways.

Considering how much I've spent with Canon, they must love me and want to keep me happy.

On to the 1Ds Mark III first shots. Traditionally I shot my wife first, with the new, and very sharp 24-70 L lens. When I did a large blowup of a small crop around her mouth, she said, "no way in hell will you post that shot." So I had to do a couple of other things to get examples.

First up , the hibiscus by the front door. Shot A, the first crop, 20 percent off top and bottom. down to the flower at 320 ISO:
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

This is the final crop. Other exposure details--24-70 L f2.8 zoom at f22 and 1/200 sec. at 64mm.

Ahh--resolution galore.

Now, a human. I needed to have my eyeglasses repaired. This lady works at the eyeglass center. This image has been cropped by ten percent to the top of her head.

You can see I was going for the eye treatment. Details: ISO 1250, f3.5 at 1/100s, 70mm on the 24-70 L lens.

The following crop was lightened just a bit so you can see the digital makeup.

Next up, a change of lens. Leitz 60mm macro f 2.8. Manual focus and auto shutter speed in AV setting. This shot is the full frame at f16 and 1/160s at 1250 ISO.

Last, I cropped in to show the sharpness. This image has brightness and contrast adjusted and sharpening. Notice the aphids at work.

This is a less drastic crop that with the first flower. In addition, being forced to use manual focus, even in a windy situation, with multiple exposures, allows me to select the part of the flower I want to emphasize. In the first I let the autofocus do its thing.

And really, all of these shots could benefit from the use of a tripod or monopod, but I just winged it.

Masterful work as usual, Charles.

And a worthy beast you have obtained.

Karl, the camera holds a lien on my social security checks for 20 months. I'll be doing some scenics this week to see what kind of results I get in wide views and fine details.

That is all right, Charles. It is my understanding that President Bush has already spent all of my social security checks before I am even old enough to enjoy them. At least you have yours to place in hoc! ;)

I am anxious to see your scenic results.

Later today I have some brag-worthy scenic images to post in a forum of its own. I have been showing my son the ins and outs of photography this past year. Since he is a Marine Science major I figured that as a research scientist he should learn not just how to take pictures but also to take them in a manner that would capture the attention of scientific funding sources and an eco conscious public as well.

Sunday, I finally let him run loose with one of my 40Ds.

My training took. He astounded me with a bunch of his imagery taken in the wilderness around Mandahl Bay Beach and Lagoon.

He is going to give me a run for my professional money. Of course I am proud of him. Some more practice and experience and he will be outdoing me. He has the eye of an artist. :D

Well, here's the Fairchild Oak. In my youth it was the Confederate Oak, but the name was changed for PC purposes, I guess. This is a stitch using a borrowed 24mm TS L lens, a tripod and the 1Ds M3.

The old Oak is estimated to be 2000 years old. Like any old man it uses it limbs as a support. Does this image remind anyone of Fangorn?

A friendly face with a bit of snout. "Welcome to my forest. Lean on my trunk. Don't mind the bark as it closes about you!"

Now this you'll love. 50 mm 1.4 lens, 3200 ISO. Full frame resized to fit here:

The above shot was color corrected and sharpened, but no noise control was done. This slice of the original shows the noise, but you can read the titles. No size reduction--thiis is 100 percent.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!
