Hello all. Recently my baby (Canon 10d) started showing a err99. From my research I found that this is common with Canon DSLRs, so I am nervous about upgrading to another Canon model. I love Canons and have all the accessories, so I would like to stick with their products. Just wondering if anyone else has faced the same issues and how you chose to resolve them. Thanks!

it also happened to me i tried my other other lenses and the cam is ok again i brought the lens and body just to make sure and canon service and they fixed it.

Take the battery out and replace it and it will usually take care of the problem. Some of the earlier Canons would do that at times. Check and see if you have any updates available for your firmware.

Using aftermarket lenses can contribute to the problem. If so, the manufacturer of the lens can rechip them for your new camera.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

ive heard also that batt problems, contact problems and mechanical problems in canon also display err 99.

Clean the contacts between the lens and camera body.

Err99 is a catchall, so many different things can cause it. I've had it for incompatible lenses and also from taking too many pics :)

I hope the replies solved the young lady's problem !!

i experienced an error 99 when i used a 3rd party flash on my 300D - shutter jammed, as a result. had to send in for repairs. after that experience, i tried to avoid 3rd party accessories.

im using a 30D now, so far so good :)

I've experienced that error every once in a while as part of the hazardous duty life of shooting around beaches. Salt air corrodes contacts and micro-fine particles of sand can cause contact problems. The problem has always been on the lens side of the equation rather than the camera body itself.

When this has happened to me, I have immediately put the offending lens aside, retiring it for that session. Typically, I then go back to the office and give the lens a good cleaning and re-electroplate the contacts with a new layer of gold. I've only had one lens that wouldn't respond to the cleaning and I dumped it rather than spend two months waiting for shipping back and forth to Canon repair.

A friend of mine also had Error 99 problems but his led back to a bent bayonet mount causing contact problems.

Best I can say is give our lenses a good cleaning before any major photo shoot. You could also invest in spare lenses so you will always have the focal length you need, no matter the technical problems. An expensive option, I know, but one that is a requirement for me since Caribbean shooting is very hard on equipment.
