| Date: 2008-04-11 21:48 Hello everyone!
I am very new to modeling and I was asked how much I would charge and the truth
is I have no idea how much to charge. I am very new so I rather charge nothing
and just do TFP, but they really wanted to pay me something....so what is the
typical starting rate for a beginner model? Any info would help me. Thanks! |

Now, you are a model I would like to meet! How much will you pay me to do a full
nude photographic series of you?
Think again about your statement, sweetie. For all things under the sun there is
a time and aplace. There is a time to pay and a time to get paid. There is a
time for fame and a time to be lame. There is a time to give advice and a time
to retreat and listen.

It is print modeling for an imaging company based in the UK.
I know you want a direct answer to your question...like me giving you an exact
dollar figure. I cannot do that for you. That is one of the things an agent or
manager who knows you and the market you are selling to can best tell you.
I can make a few suggestion based on how I determine my prices for the print
industry.
Print pricing is not static. It cannot be. Things are always negotiated based on
the circumstances.
Typically, the biggest print glamor publications actually do not
pay most of the models in their publications. Really. There are so many
girls out there wanting to be published that they gladly shoot simply in
exchange for being considered for publication if there is
space.
But there are publications that do pay. Most often these publications give an
amateur or semi-pro a set amount, usually not much, and it is "take it or leave
it". Most amateurs take it.
A more sophisticated and trained model for which there is a demand, can set a
straight series of rates that she will start negotiating from. Remember in
negotiations that the seller starts high and the buyer starts low. So, if you
want $50, you ask for say, $75. You have two danger points...you can set your
starting price so high that the buyer makes no counter offer and walks away, or
you can haggle too long, unwilling to go below the figure you really want, and
the buyer walks away. Negotiating takes skill and often some intelligence and
back ground information about your opponent. You also have to know when to walk
away and forget about a job. Agencies and managers are skilled negotiators.
Models can also set there rates for publications based upon the publications
genre, circulation, publication frequency and type of publication. Models can
also negotiate for recurring payments each time their image is used in a new
issue. Models can even negotiate for the right to annual license renewal
payments. These things have to be negotiated in a signed
release or you lose those rights.
WHAT I THINK YOU SHOULD CHARGE
I am going to give it to you straight and hope that there are no hard
feelings.
Based upon what you have said and the look and feel of your portfolio, I have to
assume that this is not a major publication that is purchasing your images. The
insistence on paying you is a bit of a giveaway since money is not a determinant
factor in having the right to publish a model's image. As a matter of fact,
insisting is not something a major publication does.
So, being your first time and all, assuming you are not posing nude, go at $25
an hour, minimum 4 hours, maximum four wardrobe changes. Sign the release for
one time use only. Let them renegotiate for additional use.
CAVEAT
What is a U.K. based company doing choosing an amateur model out of
Pennsylvania? I am quite familiar with the U.K. market and know for a fact that
there are a heckuva lot of very hot babes scratching and clawing at each other
and giving it away for the chance to be published.
By any chance does this company make coffee and tea?
Watch out for scams, lady. Do not accept a check in advance
from them. Do not accept money from them to pay a stylist, studio, photographer,
etc. Find out (from someone other than them) who they have worked with before
and contact those models. Do not ever do any modeling that
requires you to send them or anyone they suggest, money, even if it is money
that they send you. The check will bounce on you leaving you in the hole. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

However I would imagine that an existing imaging company would have a standard
rate they would pay. |

As a newbie, you might be delighted to have such opportunities. However, do
balance the excitements with a deep thought on the opportunity costs
involved.
I have seen some image banks offering 200 bucks for models to do lifestyle,
fashion or sensual (nude) shoots and later sold these pictures off at a huge
price ($4-20K) to Brands/clients for their usage.
There is also a increasing trend in photographers selling nude pictures online.
Armed with model releases and paying the models a fixed sums, their pictures are
selling like hot cakes in Pbase, earning the photographers a minimum of $10K a
month. The models arent paid any extra due to the initial releases/contracts.
So, please take note of what you are getting into, the usage rights/model
releases and protect your own interests if you are very keen to pursue such a
course of action. |

| Date: 2008-04-15 02:52 If you are a beginner model, you can`t be paid at all, coz at the first level of
your modelling your main goal is to build a good book. So if you have work
proposition which will give you a few good shots for your book you shouldn`t
refuse. Furthermore if they gonna pay you you should agree even if it`s a
ridiculously small price. |
