IF I GET AN OFFER FROM PHOTOGRAPHER HOW DO I KNOW IF I CAN TRUST THIS PERSON ESPECIALY IF I'VE BEEN ASKED TO COME FOR PHOTO SHOOT IN THE EVENING TIME??? THANKS A LOT

It can be really hard to tell whether or not a photographer is really trustworthy, especially when you meet them over the internet.

It can be helpful to look over their work, usually photographers with personal websites where they display previous work can be more legit. Also I would recommend you bring someone with you to the shoot. That way you if it turns out the photographer is trying to take advantage of you than you won’t be alone.

My best advice is always be cautious! If anything even seems slightly odd, then don't go! If the photographer is being flirty, sexual and not professional in email messages, then I would also suggest you avoid the situation.

I also want to add. That not all legit photographers have established websites. Sometimes people just starting out haven't put one together yet. so it can be difficult to tell.

Do not go alone. If you are uneasy, follow your gut always.

Oh come on now! Are you attention seeking or have you decided to become brain-dead
just at Jurgita?
What a forum question!
In everyday life I would imagine you take precautions yes? You would consider your safety if walking to the shop in the evening and act accordingly yes? In selecting a new friend in lifeyou would get to know them first yes? Purchasing a DVD Player you may wish to shop around and find out more?

If you agree with at least one of the above questions, then why ask such a simplistic question at forum?
Surely common sense tells you the answer anyway! If not then wise up or go do something else in life!
There are many, many potential models out there with awareness and commitment, how do you think
Your posting looks amongst them in an effort to sell yourself? Sad I think!
Wise up! Read up! Learn and remember that comments placed online become a record via search
engines and web crawlers, so now and into the future you have tarnished your future with such a
posting that future employers may view!
I a nutshell:
Yes, find out more about a Photographer before entering into anything!
Yes, be wary of anyone who offers to meet you evening time!

I could advise and write a book on more, but I would prefer to focus such advice and input on those
who pose more constructive questions after using their own brains first!

Quite Harsh Alexander Alexander ( Pardon my stutter).

I do not think this was simply an attention getting post but a new model asking a very legitimate question which relates to a very serious concern among models.

One should never belittle a person for asking a question especially when it concerns their own personal well being and safety.

Personally, I am appalled at the amounts of scams and fakes out there. They prey on young, inexperienced models whose only knowledge about this industry is what people tell them. If they get approached by a faker first, the model is in trouble.

Look at Jurgita as a modeling school of sorts. There are the texts in the Articles section and there are the forums for student feed back. Students are always encouraged to ask questions about things they do not understand.I believe that those of us who are experienced have a very real obligation to protect and educate newcomers.

Jana...
* Obtain his work resume.
* Talk to models he has photographed before or talk to his neighbors or business associates.
* Do a Google search
* Ask for ID. He has to obtain your ID for the paperwork, you have a right to a file copy of his ID as well.
* Take someone with you. A photographer who knows his business will not reject a chaperon unless that chaperon interferes improperly with the shoot.
* Let other people besides your chaperon know where you are going and give them the photographer's telephone number and address.
* Get an agreement to shoot in advance that states the terms and conditions of the shoot.
* Sign nothing that you do not understand.
* Carry mace.
* A photographer is not to force or pressure you to strip or exchange sexual favors for any promise of promotion.
* If TFI (Trade for Images) have any model release state that the photographer has no right to utilize images of you in any way, shape or form unless and until you have received your trade compensation (ie: the agreed upon amount of pictures from the shoot).

Sorry if my reaction seemed harsh, it is not for attention seeking purposes! I just felt that your question was very obvious! I am generally very constructive, but it was I feel an obvious question from the outset!

Your Stutter is excused!

If this was a New Model then my reaction would have been different and I too would be advising on Safety and precautions! :cantlook:

This lady clearly states at her page having worked with Dimaloe Model Management,Klick Model Management and having a mother agency of
Dynamic Models!!

So with that in mind and with reference to her age, the forum question should have been one this member could have
worked out for herself from her own experience and life skills!:dunno:

Thank you.

Dear Jana, be carefull, but don't close doors; I think there is nothing wrong in asking to bringa a friend with you, you can say that you had another thing to do together in that area. Good luck and take care!

Well, a listing of agencies...particularly when a model lists several agencies...is not an automatic indication to me that a model has developed skills, expertise and training. Too many of these internet based agencies, as opposed to brick and mortar agencies, do not invest in training and indoctrination of models. Basically, the model does an internet sign up and then waits and waits and waits and often are on their own in finding work. How many internet based agencies assign their models a personal manager? How many keep in daily communications with the models? How many verify and guarantee the jobs the models go on?

It does not surprise me that the OP has not been instructed in the basics of modeling. It does not surprise me that even though this model lists a mother agency that she does not know that any job offers must be passed through the mother agency for approval.

It does not surprise me in this age of virtual agencies that a model's daily life, promotion and image is not being managed, cultured and tailored to the market.

So no, it does not surprise me that a model has not been informed about basic safety issues.

Even so, I prefer to err on the side of caution. How many times did your mother tell you to look both ways before you cross the street? In the same manner, models need to be reminded constantly about safety issues. When nothing bad happens and things go great, we tend to relax and no longer remain alert. All it takes is one instance and a persons health and life can be placed in jeopardy.

While rapists and murderers are rare, the possibility exists and I believe we have a duty to keep our members awake and aware that things can go wrong.

She can ask the question a hundred times...I do not care that she may even be of supermodel stature...a question about safety is never a dumb question and I will never ever make someone feel bad, ashamed or embarrassed to ask such questions.

26 years in the business and there are still somethings I do not know. No one knows it all. So, Jana, you go ahead and ask all the questions to want in order to stay comfortable with your chosen career.

I would consider your advice very germane to this issue. It goes straight to the point I made about always, always, always letting people know where you are going, what time, and with whom you are shooting with. I should mention that in addition to this, and carrying a chaperon, that the model have a friend that the model will call at pre-established times.

Models get breaks during shooting and have changing times. A model can let a friend know I will call you around 10 a.m. and again at 12 noon, etc. Establish with the photographer that you will need a five or ten minute break hourly. There are some types of shooting where such a break is not possible...in such an instance, it can be your chaperone's job to make the phone calls at the appointed times. On the other side, your friends can call the chaperon from time to time to check on things. The biggest factor to remember with doing this kind of check-in is that it must not disturb the shoot or the model's or photographer's mood or 'zone'.

Regarding email communications, I concur. Until you have established a rapport with a photographer and trust issues have been resolved, it is best to keep your email record with a third party like Jurgita. External emails can be changed or modified, those within the Jurgita system cannot. In the U.S. and U.K. (I do not know about other countries) an email record leading up to a shoot can be construed as contract negotiations and goes towards proof of intent of both parties in case of dispute.

My only problem with the email system within Jurgita is that I cannot send attachments that include contracts or model releases through this system. I am forced to ask a model to contact me externally in order to send such important documents. This puts a hole in the tracking system which is not necessarily a fatal flaw as external communications can be used as evidence provided they remain unmodified on the host server. In other words, never delete communications regarding your career. Even MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger give you the ability to save conversations and record video and voice communications.

Basically, remember that you are engaging in business and businesses always maintain records of customer/client contacts.

*******************
Now...regarding letting people know who you are shooting with...might I suggest that Jurgita consider including a either a forum topic area on member pages where models and photographers can post the time, place and dates of booked shoots. This way a photographer dare not try anything fishy because the whole world knows that Jana is shooting with Karl on Hollywood Blvd. at 10a.m. on Christmas morning.

Very true and in actual fact Jana did explain in a message that she has only been with those agencies a couple of weeks, so in learning of that maybe I was a little quick to pounce with my initial reply here!

I think we all have Members Safety as a priority and it's good to see such responses!

oh come on guys she asked how to check out (strange) photographer, not if thats suspicious or not!

otherwise she wouldnt ask anything would she?

ps: and at the end no one gave her tips how to check him out, funny LOL. book with thousand words and five authors and zero answers - very creative

Well in terms of checking out a new photogrpaher contact I suggest Jana should ask for
any contact references of those having worked with him/her in recent times or currently.

Chatting with those previously having worked with a photogrpaher can be a good reference, give you more peace of mind and also an indication of the photogrphers character and how they like to work!

Links to previous work and successes online is also good and can show the history of a Photographer! You should ensure that clear and concise contact details are shown by the photographer, if they operate online these should be openly shown within their links or own web pages!

I do note that one case I have tried to link to as a Highly Respected Photogrpaher and advisor here, no names mentioned, has links that do not connect and have no record of prior work regardless of pretty photos at their pages, so please be wary of all!

From now on 50 activity points will turn into 1 credit, so you may earn credits as easy as never before !!!

All models and photographers are able to moderate photos! We will save a lot of time for moderators this way. Please read the short instruction on how to moderate and earn points very quickly.
Also, models and photographers can moderate part of the profiles as well! This is a fast way to earn some action points and credits!
