Is The Term Supermodel Abused? Who Is A Supermodel?

Some people say the term is abused and that many of the models today who are referred to supermodels aren't supermodels. I agree, but it's hard when people say Gisele is the last supermodel and someone like Adriana Lima is not a supermodel... she's well known and successful. Isn't that the criteria for being called a supermodel?
Live and let die:saint:

The term "supermodel" is out of date today!
In Europe models are just.... models:thumbup:
We have Naomi Campbell & Kate Moss in the UK, nobody refers to them as supermodels these days:thumbup:

Naomi Campbell's well known at the moment for assaulting police officers with the recent incident at London Heathrow airport, she's around 40 these days!
All the other models we used to call supermodels are all gone!
Adriana Lima... supermodel? nah! just ordinary model! she was with some footballer & that's the only reason she got the media spotlight on her:thumbup:

i agree wid Gary.....

I agree with you, except for Adriana. You're confusing Adri with Gisele. She dates the footballer. Adri mostly dates UNknown men. Her only high profile boyfriend was Lenny Kravitz and that was brief. She was linked to Derek Jeters--the baseball player but THEY BOTH denied it. Her current boyfriend is some third string basketball player. Adri's fame and popularity --she has more Internet hits than Gisele--is of her own doing.

Supermodels are just models, who made this modeling really popular in pop culture. Later on a list of 50 most influential female and 50 male models was published, and supermodel status applied to them. Thats it. Many of these models are now around 30-40.
I think that "supermodel" status could be applied to most influential models of all generations, even now. Though what differentiates them from common models is the fact that many of them would be recognized globaly by people outside modeling business.

Didnt we have a topic on this already? :dunno:

Anyway, as most of you said, the title Supermodel is now dead. I agree, but I still think there is a division between all models. I dont believe all models are on the same level, I think in todays society we refer to them as TOP models instead of SUPER models. And of course those TOP models are the girls and guys constantly booking campaigns, runway shows, etc all the time.

Spot on Blake:thumbup:
From anything I've read or seen on tv I've not even seen the term supermodel used for some time:thumbup:

Well to me, its better to let your actions speak louder than a "supermodel" tag. There are some models who earn just as much without the tag and they have certainly proven their worth, not just with their money earned, but with the respect that comes with their passion for work and professionalism shown :)

The word supermodel is definately different from being a model.

A model for example can do commercial, walk the runway but not do some other things in the modelling world.

A super model is like a totalty of what models does. It doesn't just go with being a runway, you'll have to be good in all things. Sing, dance, rap, swim, speak different languages, do so many things which a normal model cannot do. Thats what makes them super, not their personality or something. You tell them to do anything, they'll achieve it in the best way before you know it. thats what i call SUPERMODEL

Its like definition of Economic and Economy

You guy get my flow?
