Am looking to get a new digital slr.

Nikon D80, Canon 450d and Sony A350 are all serious contenders. I love the high resolution of the A350. A lot of people like canon but i have a good nikon flashgun and am thinking should i run with the d80 or wait for its replacement.

Rumour has it a new model will be on show at the tech shows later in the year?

What do you think?

Sony A350? high resolution? nah! better go for the Canon or the Nikon:thumbup:
Then again september & october may bring some newer, better ones, may pay off to hang on a month or 2 & see what new ones come out:thumbup:
If you buy a new camera just now & a new one comes out on the market next month, it might have a few features the one you just bought doesn't have that would have been great to have:dunno:

Keep an eye on the websites:thumbup:

h sony cyber shot is oossmm?
:D

Yes, there will be news and product launches during Photokina

If you can wait for a while, you can evaluate all the new products from all 3 brands and decide which will be suitable for you..

What is the price of the Nikon D80, Canon 450D and Sony Alpha A350 in your locality at the moment?

There's more than 3 brands on the market to broaden your choice:thumbup:
Buy a camera that you like, but by features, control layout & what it has & hasn't got...
you don't have to buy the same as 2 or 3 others are buying, buy the one you like:thumbup:
if you like the canon buy it, or if the sony's the one that's best for you, go with it, if you're photo's are only really for print in magazines & use on the web more megapixels won't really make much difference comparing it with your existing camera unless you intend showing it in a massive hanging print in a gellery or the projector:thumbup:

I agree with Gary.... buy the one that fits your needs, or has features you think you'll use. As far as features ... one thing that guides my choice is what type of memeory card it uses. That should not be your high priority probably, but to me it is high on the list as I have all Compactflash Cards as of now. Once you really get into it and start buying accessories, then you get tied to a brand as it gets expensive buying eveything new every time you buy a new camera.

Sorry Gary for the misspelling.

Yeah it's a spelling mistake but it can be corrected by clicking the pen logo of the 3 above the post:thumbup:

I got a D80 for a while, and it's a great camera, great functions, and with good lenses it makes amazing photos. Probably the best SLR camera in the lower price range. If you don't need any of the auto/program functions (which means you are an advanced photographer) the opt instead for the new Nikon D300. It's really a PRO camera with great performances, at a very affordable price. The backside is that you'd better know what you're doing, cause it won't correct your mistakes.
Anyway every new season brings new cameras, so yes, wait afetr the summer to see what's on the market (also because new products usually make last year's prices to drop tremendously)...
Cheers,
Geeepsy.

There is also a New Model of the Canon EOS series called EOS 1000 ( in Europe ) i think it was a good Model but dont use it befor... is it also out in the US ?

That's a good line up Alan, do you have any glass already? if you do, your best bet is to stick to the glass you already own, if this is going to be your first SLR, out of that line up I would get the 450D.
Although I would wait and see what's the replacement for the 40D.
Best of lucks with your decision, remember to post the first pics with your new baby.
Take care.

Yes the Canon EOS 1000D is the new bench mark for entry level DSLR. Have seen the samples pictures from it..Its a decent camera for all beginners

Go with the Canon.
Just make sure you get L series lens .
That way if ever you decide to go up in your camera bodies or should I say upgrade your camera bodies you have the fantastic lens to move up with.
Hope this helps .

Cheers

The Canon's a great all rounder for everything & if you had a Canon film camera most of your existing lenses will fit:thumbup:

Well I hate to add to the confusion, but if you do not have glass already, then look at the Sigma SD-14. I love it. I have a A-100 with 9 or 10 lenses and it is just gathering dust since I got the SD-14's. While it looks a bit noisy at higher ISO, there new software cleans that up very well. Sigma also make good glass. I have stayed with the fixed 2.8 lenses. 105mm, 18-50mm 70-210mm
 Cheers

Gary it depends on your Canon film camera. There are a lot of old Canon film cameras and the lens will not work on the digital models. Some of the old standard EOS lens will fit to the new digital cameras but because the sensors are so sharp and hold a lot of info they ten to show up all the imperfections in these lens. Like I said earlier if you buy L series lens ( you can buy second hand ) then you can not go wrong with any digital Canon SLR.

With the new Canon and Nikon intermediate bodies now coming on the market it might be wise to wait until October to buy a new Camera at the $1000-1500 level. The 50D will be Canon's most advanced body with feature even the pro bodies don't have and the Nikon D90 will have a nice price point and have many of the features of the D3, D300, D700 series.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Depends on what you have, Nikon can use almost all glass going back to the manual focus you got with the F2, Canon will only use the autofocus going back to the rebel. Sony will fit all old Minolta glass, do not worry about the flash units they are a dime a dozen especially if you are using the older models.

Nikon has announced the D90 with the ability to shoot video, which until recently was impossilbe with an SLR, because of the way the camera is built.

In my own personal opinion is find a camera store, not Walmart or a department store, they should have the cameras on hand and try them see what fits your hand and what interface you like. Personallly I like the Nikon myself I have been through 5 or 6 bodies as I have updated from the old N80, most of them still work.

The other nice thing about Nikon is the chance to get the Zeiss glass with Nikon and Pentax (a great starter camera, I am still using my old manual film camera which is almost 30 years old. That is more high end though.

Yeah, the D90 is looking pretty good on paper.

nikon seems like the way to go, since uve got some nikon gear already, thats some savings in $ as dlsr's a pretty expensive hobby. one aspect i recommend having serious thought into is the construction and how it feels in your hand - this is pretty subjective but generally ppl say nikon's better in terms of ergonomics. ive tried canon nikon sony etc but found canon to be more comfortable in my hands compared to nikon. i think thats pretty important cos youll be handling it many many times

nevertheless, the nikon d90 seems like big news currently with its video mode - im sure in no time canon sony and the rest will follow with their 60D or 500D or 1100D and alpha 400, 450 500 who knows? ... just my 2 cents

Hi Evrybody, am Sid from Mauritius, am a nikon user, hav been from F601 to d70 n now d80, Andrew..for me the nikon fits better my hands..so i think God built our hands to b compatible with certain brands..lol. i do think for most of us photographers..its really a matter of choice, and for those who can really prove x to b better than y..i salute n respect their opinions. Apart from being nikonian..canonian..kodakina..marsian n so on.. i also salute ALL photographers as we share practically the same common passion!
Anyway..my poppin to this forum is to say a big Hello n peace to evryone here...:)
