"Myspace Pictures" ... Appropriate For Modeling Websites?

On all modeling sites I have been on, I always come across a boy or girl with a port full of "Myspace Pictures" ... you know what I'm talking about... The ones done infront of the bathroom mirror, or the picture pointed at a 45 degree angle...
I think it's silly to post such pictures. It doesn't show anything really, nothing more than a person who is unprofessional.
Now most people have told me "Well... not everyone knows photographers." Then go online and find the closest place that does creditable work.
"But not everyone can afford professional pictures..."
Then save up your money.
It's as simple as that.

When I got into modeling, I saved my money for months so I could get some real photos.
I then went to D+H Photography, and got some shots... I never EVER posed my myspace photos...

I don't see the point...

Does anyone else?

I understand shots that show you without the makeup, or the lighting, or the angle... The REAL you... However, these are not shots done with funny faces, or anything of that matter...
These are simple polaroids... Ones that show you in a relaxed position, full body, and close up face...

I think you get my point.
Thanks for letting me voice my opinion ^_^

Did you ever stop to consider before posting this topic that the new aspiring models aren't rich & can't afford to shell out a grand for a pro photog to shoot them?:dunno:

The photo is only so people can see how you look, though I agree it is better for model members to get someone else to take the picture, even if it's a friend:thumbup:
but what if there is someome that wants to be a model & sees this site as a starting platform & hasn't got anyone to take the pictures & hasn't got the funds for a pro photo shoot?

Anyway those sort of photo's are NOT myspace photo's:doh:
the correct term is "self portrait"

Allright you have had a pro photo shoot done... that's fine but everyone does it their own way... if your way is better it shoul pay off in the end & you should get a lot of work then:thumbup:

Takes every kind of people to make the world go round:thumbup:

I agree.

It's personally difficult for me to find a photographer willing to help me start a portfolio. I don't have a lot of money but I don't mind spending a great deal of my time and effort with someone one-on-one. [An amateur photographer + an amateur model... it can develop into something nice, if you both have dedication.]
Photos are photos.

You never know who you'll find on this site,
but for now I'm just waiting in anticipation.

Good luck to everyone.

I get what you're saying by like everyone else some people don't have any where else to start my first profile pic was a snapshot of myself actually so
I think it's fine :D

But thanks for voicing your opinions that is what this forum is for and it's good to know that you care about what is going on in jurgita!

Well... Self portraits might have a value if you do them correctly, that is you can do yourself polaroid images. However you get job judged by the look of your portfolio.
You are double handicaped with "self portraits" : it is harder to pose and make good photo, and it is harder to achieve an original photo that would help you stand up from the crowd.

Photographers are not cheap, but in many cases you are better of with some friend shooting some photos in nature than "do it yourself" style.

I kinda agree with Marlo. I've been to other websites and indeed there are loads of gals who would love to model, and yes..a lot of them shows their "cute" 45degrees angle photos. To be frank about it, even as an amateur photographer I'm not attracted to do a photoshoot with these gals even though they may have the face anyone would love, as I felt they have not shown the level of "want" to be a model.

While I fully agree that many would not be able to afford a professional photographer to build a great portfolio, I think it would be helpful if the aspiring model could try to show "some" level of posing. A step beyond that could always be a TFCD with a non pro photographer.

I've done a TFCD revently for a gal who really wanted to be a model and to be honest, the results was far from my expectation BUT at least I'm glad that gal tried very hard.

Sorry if I may have sounded harsh here.

Oh yeahhhhh! Myspace pictures :cantlook:
Only if they're super hot for the model and catch their best features I guess. :proud:

I don't have many pictures other than those "myspace" crappy angle pictures. They're all personal and I'm not fully pursuing modeling. Just love the realm and interested in photography.

it was a nice point brought up that if you can't afford professional, have a friend help and take amateur photos but try to get many poses and do some nature shots... you're bound to have a couple really nice "keepers" for a personal portfolio.

:muscle:

Myspace does represent a fantastic way to promote and brand yourself. Its a phenomenon that caught on and connects people from all over the world with just a click.

Self portraits can be an art form too. Have seen many models with photographic skills bringing this up one notch and really produced fantastic themed shots. Some even made it in competitions and exhibitions recently.

It takes time and effort, together with the correct break and opportunity to get a proper folio done. Just be patient and try and touch base with all the wonderful people around your area.

I am new to modeling so ALL my pictures on jurgita are what you call "myspace" pictures. I dont have any other pictures so I was stuck with them. && I think that as long as it shows your looks its appropriate because you can still be noticed by photographers and agencies.

Seems to me there are only a few choices. A- "self portrait"
B- Amatuer photo, standing you out in bright sunlight.
C- Shelling out a thousand $ and try to get a pro to do a few head shots.
Has anyone considered using a photographers assistant? They have access to a lot more lights and props for a decent photo shoot. They also have knowledge of photography, and don't forget the passion.
Oh yeah, D- The TFP photos that I do (hint, hint to all NY models);)
" A word is worth a thousand pictures "

I'm new to modeling to and my family is far from rich so yeah I use "MySpace photos" too. I know it is un professional but Thats all the pictures I have. well besides my Yearbook photo that I used as my Main picture
AKA Mr. Muscle :muscle: AKA Mr. Cool

I've seen some of the "bathroom mirror" shots too where the camera is clearly visible too, in some instances those pictures are better than myspace as a lot of the myspace photo's are just done with webcams:dunno:

Face > from the front, from the side & from an angle towards the side:thumbup:

Body > full height (head to feet), upper half of body (head down to waist or hips), take shots again from the front, side, from the sideward angle from both sides:thumbup:

Tips > how you look and what you can see of yourself in the photos is more important than locations, and make sure the photo is clear, with digital cameras if you foul up the photo just wipe it & take another, easy to undo mistakes! and if you think it's too dark or too light or thr colour is too strong or weak? your all in one printer/scanner software usually has a photo editor built into it:thumbup:

There's a lot you can do with what you already have:thumbup:

I don't know guys... I have had over 30 TFP sessions in the last year. It really is not hard to find someone to shoot you for free. As a matter of fact, most photogs will offer to build their own ports. But you have to get a MM account to find and connect with people in your area. It usually takes only minutes to find someone. I have never paid anyone to take photos. I have never met a weirdo either. Hmm.. Maybe that is unusual?

There is a lot that will shoot you for free, most of them are amateur or semi-pro as they are trying to build their ports:thumbup: but there is a lot that will make a charge too, (mainly established pro's & photo agency photogs) & their rates vary...

There are the weirdo's & the scammers out there so it still pays to check up the photog's cred's sometimes:thumbup:

I agree with Marlo, personally I HATE IT when I see people with those 45 degree angle shots of themselves.

Now Erica, tell me, what agency would waste their time looking at people with these ,"Myspace photos"??? And it only puts you back to square one because, if they are interested, then they will asked you for better pictures. So NO MATTER WHAT you need any one of the opinions listed by M.R. Manna...

Or just have simple polaroids taken of yourself...Seriously what do you think agencies do when they find someone on the street with no pictures? They take Polaroids of them, put it in a book and send them and the model out to castings until they arrange a time with their agency photographer. Seriously Ive known new models who have booked a Gucci runway show just off of a few simple polaroids.

Then again its always nice to see a face in front of the portfolio, because it gives you an idea of what the person looks like. But those people cross the line when they then ask for people to critic their myspace photo...

Moral of the story is, get better pictures. Theres plenty of ways to get them, just make an effort:thumbup:

Getting better pictures isn't all that hard, even if it's just getting somebody else like a friend to take them:thumbup:
I think the problem is they just can't be bothered:thumbup:
or maybe they just want to say to their friends Look! I'm on a modelling website! and are not serious at all & maybe shouldn't be here after all?:dunno:

I guess your right in some cases... :dunno:

If you really are serious you will find a way. I have shot with some top photgos and a film maker in LA.. ( They shoot Calvin Klein, Fashion week runway stuff, Gucci etc.) And-- have 5 shoots this week down there. You don't have to settle for crappy photogs etc. I think home made pics look cheap and everyone just snickers when they see them. They really do but won't say anything to you. They ask ,"Are you serious? LOL!!" Poloraids are fine for editorial/fashion agencies. Regular commercial agencies like lifestyle kinds of pics. The bottom line is this... present yourself the best possible way that you can. If you don't, your just another wanna be model right?

Another thing that's been over looked here is if a new model member suddenly just appears in jurgita, no matter if she's got photo's taken by a photographer or by a friend, if she hasn't got the looks she's not going to make it anywhere, same goes for male models too:doh:

my parents aren't willing to pay a photographer so I had to break out my tri-pod and set my camera on timer and just try my best to work with it.

But I see where you're coming from. I tried to filter through all of my "myspace pictures" when I joined here.
