others is where a tog showcases some of there work, most togs I know dont like
being other side of the lens, it would help if we could all leave comments on
profiles, like good model, gives 100% or good tog fun to work with etc,
like all bussinesses recomendations are our best form of future shoots, photos
can be fakes I agree, models can put up pics that are years old as well,I always
like to meet a model before any proposed shoot for a coffe and chat, you then
both know if your going to work well together or not, well thats my 10 cents
worth. |

You can leave comments on many types of profiles if they sign
up to accept friends. You can also comment in the blog section if the person has
posted. You can also create a forum post on a profile with work you consider
exceptional.

I look at profiles as an introductions and very definitely not the sole basis
for hiring. On the ground, you can have multiple auditions, casting calls, call
backs, interviews, weigh-ins, test shoots, background checks, etc. before hiring
a model.
There is no reason not to follow the same process simply because the model
introduction is done over the internet as opposed to snail mail. The internet
process, being a lot cheaper that circulating print portfolios or introduction
letters, affords anyone the opportunity to apply as a model.
The problem I see is not the amount or quality of the images on profiles, but
rather, new models not understanding the process used for serious hiring.
And then there is the trust issue. Scam artists abuse the process, using it to
bilk others. Unfortunately, it appears that most amateur models' introduction to
the process is through the many scammers out there. Additionally, in forums like
these, amateurs often give other amateurs incorrect advice in their paranoia
over scams.
Quite frankly, professional model selection takes time. There are often multiple
casting calls trying to find the right 'look'. Sometimes a model gets called in
several times. Often there is more than one test shoot. And still
that model may not be hired. Or a project can change scope. Be
canceled. Be accelerated. All on the whims of an ever changing market.
This is what a model goes through to get gigs on the ground. Over the internet,
when one asks a new model to go through the same process, they instantly believe
that they are being scammed. Try doing a casting call over the
internet...instantly people think scam. So why have a model portfolio in the
first place if you are afraid to present images of yourself to potential
buyers?
I do shake my head because, when I have a project, I am going to let hundreds of
models who fit the criteria needed know about it. Only one out
of those hundreds can get the job. Sometimes no one who has
submitted will get the job. This can be because the client did not like any of
the looks. Models do need to understand this and not be upset because they sent
out images to audition but did not get a paying gig. This is the process. It
will always be the process.
Frankly, the threat of being scammed is more real for a person on my end of the
business than on the model's end. By not hiring through an agency, my cash
becomes at risk when wanting to hire a model over the internet. The potential
employer somehow has become the "untrustworthy bad guy" for needing more
information before spending money.
The portfolio is how a model says "hello". What images are placed and the
quality of the image can give some info on how meticulous or prepared a model
is. It also can determine how much or how little you would be willing to pay a
model. However, the portfolio's images are not what makes me
write out a check. That can only happen after I personally verify the model and
have seen enough images to know that that model is definitely what is needed for
a project.
Models need to worry about others using their images to make money and not
paying the model for them. A model cannot be afraid to send images requested for
an audition. Thus, the model needs to verify the individual making the request.
Images on a portfolio can help in boosting one's confidence in both the buyer
and the seller. However, not having any images posted does not automatically
make a person or company fake. Just like posting an image does not make a person
real. Each and every one of us has to make those decisions for ourselves on a
case-by-case basis.
Mandating profile images on accounts that are not models, actors or entertainers
would be an unnecessary waste of bandwidth as, by themselves, they do nothing to
verify one's integrity. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
