i got notified by a woman named Brenda who said that her store C4U (Clothes 4 U) was opening up and needed models for their clothes. the payoff was 500 bucks but she wants to pay through creditcard and wants a hell of alot of personal info. i told a friend about it who told me to ask around and that this was most likely a scam. He said a friend of his had the same offer. anyone else get this offer?

Does sound like a scam:endecided:
First I've ever heard of paying a model by credit card though:dunno:

that's what i was thinking. thanks gary

Someone else DID get this and they emailed me about it. I have directed them to this forum post...
Why do we struggle to paddle upstream while the river is taking us where we need to go?

Run for your life!!!

LOL~

Why am I not surprised that you never heard of that payment method? Why am I also not surprised that you once again opened your mouth and made a statement without having a clue of what you are talking about.

A kindly tip for the future: If you do not know...shut up!

I am beginning to suspect that I am the only professional photographer on this site who owns a model agency. (Bought in June 2007.) I have known quite a few models that are set up to take credit card payments. I knew of the practice before the popularity of the internet and I know that the practice expanded exponentially with the advent of model-owned websites and especially the invention of Pay Pal. I know a lot of professional models who give businesses and photographers the option of paying deposits via credit card. Credit cards are much safer than checks, cheaper than wire transfers, certified checks and monetary instruments and faster than the mail.

For 8 months I have been wrestling with a nightmare of logistical and cost issues in trying to take a brick and mortar agency electronic and a lot of my hair-pulling has been a result of the fact that most amateur models do not have a quick, easy and track-able method of accepting payments that I can assign to staff without worries.

While I have had my issues with PayPal in their early days (including winning a settlement from them after years of agony) the company has cleaned up their procedural act tremendously and I am now suggesting to models that they create a method of accepting credit card payments.

The nice thing about credit cards: You know instantly whether or not a payment has been made and credit card fraud is extremely rare as compared to check kiting schemes.

A model is a business person and should act like one especially in the financial arena. I know of thousands of models that accept credit cards. You know of none. Hmmmmmmm....

You actually have not provided enough information for me to know whether or not the offer is legitimate, a scam or merely a poorly thought out business plan.

Those of you who know me know that I am loath to call something a scam without evidence or proof. I always advocate that people be extremely careful in all dealings and do good research.

There is also the possibility with this person that there is no hard cash flow and that she is funding her new enterprise with her own credit. This is never a wise thing to do but may be a course of action that she believes might work for her. I do not think it will.

Typically, a proper business enterprise will either impose a method of payment via their standard business practice or ask what form of payment you can accept. If this lady is on the up-and-up my suspicion is that she lacks hard cash. Her venture might flop but that is of no concern to you as long as you get paid.

I am concerned about your mention of "a lot of personal info". What exactly does that mean? What kind of info is she asking for?

One of the big benefits of a model accepting payments by credit card is that there is no personal information required from you to receive payments. Not even an address. Was the personal information related to the payment or somehow related to specs for the modeling job? Right now, because of questions regarding the legal interpretation of certain U.S. federal laws, I attach a copy of a model's government issued identification card to my copy of every model release signed. This is mandatory in the US for any nude or sexually explicit imagery, but I, and most professional photographers that I know, do it for all shoots as a personal safety measure.

However, this ID is generally photocopied at the time of the shoot although for Adult work, a copy of your ID may be required to be faxed in advance. Please only do this with companies you know and trust.

~ Now, internet modeling and booking is still in a very experimental stage. An offer to pay you to work after just a single internet contact screams two things to me: Fraud or Amateur. I am still trying to work things out with my agency as to how to vet and verify individuals located through the internet. It is actually proving to be a very, very costly undertaking and as yet, I have not figured out how to break even. Proper vetting requires a trusted person or employee on the ground at the location where the potential model lives. The big agencies tend to either have people stationed in major cities in various countries or can work through local agencies to have a potential model looked at, interviewed and test shot.

With networking sites such as this, members can get some sense of comfort by working only with those members who have already worked with other members.

(As a matter of fact, I think I will start a forum post where members can list other members that they have worked with, met or otherwise interacted with on a regular basis.)

I believe that the bottom line is that unless you have interacted with someone, or know of other trusted people who have, be cautious until you find out more about the person making the offer.

I cannot make a suggestion based upon the information you have provided except to say "Be very careful". Do not let you fear of losing a potentially legitimate job override your otherwise good sense. Proceed with caution.

Besides, if you cannot accept credit cards then she is not an issue, is she now?

Robert Leonard, however, has provided some clue in stating that he knows someone else that has received the same offer. While it may be likely that she is seeking a number of models for this clothing line, if she has no cash-in-hand, I see problems. If we find that there is a huge number of people receiving these emails then I would say it is a safe bet that something is foul. I also keep wondering about that personal info bit.

There are too many Clothes 4 U stores for me to look this gal up without more information. However, if she is working for a franchise or has a retail store that she buys clothing wholesale for, then she would not need models. Franchises tend to mandate their own marketing practices and models for advertising are usually obtained through headquarters and not the individual stores themselves. Individual retail operators will also seek models in their local area as cheaper and more convenient than going through the hassle and risk of internet recruiting. It makes no financial sense to pay travel, room and board, especially for an unknown model.

$500 is also a high amount for a store to pay for an unknown model.

If this is not a scam or fraud then this is a person who is woefully ignorant about the trade and who will be bankrupt shortly.

The e-mail above is a scam, no doubt abouth that, why would he ask for your credit card details including your ssn.
People can always doubt what you say, but they can't doubt what you do.

Agreed with Akland Images. If she is going to pay you, there is no need for **your** credit card information.

Akland Images:

Well that confirms that then:thumbup:

Carib Goodies:

Why am I not surprised that you never heard of that payment method?

An aspiring model is hardly going to be able to accept payment by credit card or debit card, however I could maybe see an agency with amateur models accepting credit card payments from photographers, though not in Europe:sleep:

Carib Goodies:

Why am I also not surprised that you once again opened your mouth and made a statement without having a clue of what you are talking about.

As far as scam goes I do actually know what I'm talking about, or to put it in other words fraud:thumbup:

Thanks, Robert. Now this is information around which a judgment can be formed.

Most of the information above is needed when you are making a payment. It is a smartly worded email. Read it again, people. You are agreeing to pay them $500 for a studio shoot. If you give them your info, they will be able to charge your credit card for $500. When you report them, they hold up the contract you made with them authorizing the charge. If they limit their greed to a mere $500.

This information:
Issuing Bank...........
Card Limit.................
SSN....................
MMN............

...is information that only an identity thief would need.

The biggest warning sign
You do not make credit card transactions through email! Never fill in an email asking for information. NEVER EVER!

Secure credit card transactions are carried out only encrypted web pages. In most browsers, the address bar will turn yellow and a 'lock' icon will appear at an edge of your browser window. This is one indicator that your transaction is safe.

If you are not on a secure page, any credit card information you type can be copied.

As a bottom line, people have to understand that a business will not offer to hire and pay a model it has never seen. If you sit back and just wait for offers to come into your email Because you are just oh so beautiful  all you are going to get is scammed or contacted by horny people.

Use your common sense. There are legitimate photographers out there looking to trade with or hire models for a shoot. These will be the photographers in your local area or traveling photographers. This is your main market. A big offer is not going to suddenly come to your email unless it is a scam.

Fiddle faddle. European agencies use credit cards all of the time just like any other business. They accept payments for all of their models, not just the pros. Amateurs cannot become pros unless they are paid, Genius.

Can you answer me two questions:
1) Is it true that ignorance is bliss?
2) Are you happy?
