Well it was 29 years ago that I first took a course in photography (grade 8). I
have finally decided to make my full time job photography. I was torn between
just going for it, or going to school to learn how not to make the mistakes I
know I have gotten into. Now having busted the last 2 professional ventures, I
think that maybe the business side of the program will help me from going down
for a third time.
Of course the first thing we are learning is going back to roots photography,
yup back in the darkroom working with film. I keep looking at the back of the
camera expecting to see the histogram. AArrg. Now I have to pay attention to
things like in camera metering and proper composition. It is truly amazing how
we (well me for sure) just grab a DSLR and shoot a couple hundreds frames and
think oh I can just pick out one later. News flash, I have 6000 + images and can
probably weed that back to under 1000. What people forget is there is a cost for
your time. Better to spend an extra minute or two than to have to go through 30
- 40 shots to find one that is ok, and then spend anywhere from 10 minutes to ?
hours getting it right.
So I will keep up a running commentary of my adventure back into the realm of
the dreaded 35mm Slide.
Going to school is cool. After years of working strictly film and the cost it
was difficult for me to get out of that "don't take the shot" mode if it wasn't
perfect in my mind. Now with digital it's the old machine gunners credo: spray
and pray. Film is tough work but man do you learn a lot about composition.
I wish you the best of luck and above all ... have fun!
Well it is not that cool right now. Around 28 deg C. BUT..... Winter is coming
and so are those -30 deg C days with wind chill bringing it down to past -40 F.
I might have to get a few more batteries for those shooting days.
Yesterday was a great assignment. We went to a go-kart track and mini golf and I
group rode the karts while the other 2 groups shot them. That was pretty good as
they let us into the infield. Then some laps in a two place kart for some great
shots . One driving the other with the camera. Hmm.....that was a school
trip.
On the 25, all the students have been invited to take part in a Fashion show /
shoot for Nygard. A Winnipeg based fashion house. I think that one will be quite
interesting.
I think this is a wonderful choice - i have considered taking some
buisness/marketing classes and of course some photoshop classes - I still shoot
rolls of 35mm and 120 - just to keep myself honest - can't wait to read your
updates - I might learn something.
