Meeting A Photographer Online...what To Look For?

What should I be looking for when I get requests from photographers to meet up and do a shoot? What is reasonable information to ask for? I have been contacted by several photographers from this site, but some don't have a portfolio to show me, either because they're just getting started or because they aren't allowed to release nude photos at request of the models.

I guess my concern is, what is the line between healthily cautious and OVERLY cautious? What information does a reputable photographer give you? What should I be asking of them?

:muscle: Never meet with anyone off the web alone. Always take along a friend, preferably male and tough-looking.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Always take someone with you
Ask for references (other models they have worked with)

As for those without Images in there Folio...I wouldn't go near them!!....Everyone has Images they have taken and I think it's a poor excuse saying they have just started!.........So show what you have done!...and people on here would be more than happy to help you (IMHO).

If it doesn't feel right...It proberbly isn't right!........Be Safe!

Hi JenMari.

Be carefull. Forums like this are also a place for bad guys
Ask for references and don't meet alone. Tell him, that you will come with another (male :muscle: ) person and the most of this photographers aren't interested any more.

Good luck ...

Tomorrow must be the longest day  because everything is scheduled on it

Just be careful girl.
In this world you can't just trust anyone.
I wish you luck!!
:lips: Love

Check their portfolio thoroughly. Also compare their pictures to the kind of pictures for the kind of work you like to do more of. If the pictures don't look like what you like to do, find another photographer.

How can a person be a photographer without a portfolio. Isn't a photographer someone who takes pictures? And who can't find someone or something to take pictures of? I mean...a photo of their mother? Girlfriend? Brother, Sister Aunt? Even Fido since he doesn't have to give permission. No scenic shots? No nothing?

Ah...nudes. Yes, the Tog has nudes but has no permission to portfolio them. Hmmmm. Only has nudes. That doesn't sound suspicious to me. I say take the gig, shoot outdoors at some remote location or, better still, meet him at Motel 8. That should get you not only shots for your portfolio but a tale to tell your grand children and the cops.

We know everyone has to get their start somewhere. However, I am not certain, unless he is paying bookoo bucks, that you would be best served being someone's first time. The awkwardness, the fumbling about, the miscues...sorry...wrong thread.

But you get my point.

Amateur, professional, wannabee, hobbyist...it does not matter. Always, always, always check the photographer out! If the togs a pro it is likely that he/she belongs to a photographer's association. As a pro, he/she has to have a business license. Get references and check them. Also be smart when checking references. I can give you a list of names that are simply my friends and I tell them what to tell you. If they are references, they should be able to email you small samples of his/her work. Look for any published works of that Tog. Do a Google search.

If this tog has no port, how do you know his/her shooting style is something that matches your style?

Just always use your common sense and also follow your gut instinct.

I would stay away

I think there's a fine line between reasonable caution and paranoia.

Reasonable caution: Does the photographer want you to meet him in an isolated place, is he offering much more money than is usual or making usually big promises, are his intentions vague and/or does the way he communicates make you feel uncomfortable or uneasy?

Paranoia: Demanding several references, asking for his CV, life history and taking along a bodyguard.

Generally photographers have more to lose than models. You are agreeing to meet strangers (and whoever they fancy bringing along with them) with several hundreds of pounds/dollars/etc. of equipment. How many models expect a photographer to bring someone with him? If the model can't 'model' you have lost whatever money you've paid for the shoot, if she fails to turn up altogether you've lost a days work and any money you've already spent on the shoot.

I mostly agree with Simon. Be careful, not fearful or paranoid. If it's possible, meet with the photographer before the shoot. Go for a coffee (or tea or beer or whatever) in a public place. Have a visit. Get them to bring a portfolio of their work. You will find that meeting the photographer in a social situation will make you more comfortable when you do your sitting. If you don't have a nice visit then don't go ahead with the shoot. How could you possibly get decent photos if you're not comfortable?

Another thing is that I don't think it's a bad idea to bring a friend to a shoot. I don't allow the friend into the camera room (it affects the model) but I know that if the model is a bit unsure that she will take comfort in knowing that there is someone that she knows just outside the door. If the model is relaxed and secure, the shoot is always better.

never take risk.

I agree with Karl... though would take it a step further...

Meet him in a dark alley wearing nothing but suspenders, a trenchcoat, and a blindfold.

Wait for him bent over with your hands holding your ankles.

Be sure to keep your bankcard in your left pocket, and the details such as your date of birth and PIN number in the same pocket... just incase you forget.

If of age, heck anyway, have a few drinks first so your judgement is not impaired or cloudy.

If he offers you a ride somewhere, it will sure beat walking. But remember not to fasten your seat belt.

And if you MUST bring someone else... be sure you have enough whipped cream and an extra set of handcuffs.

first off, would you meet me without having a clue who i am, where i came from (perharps, just out of a nut house or prison), just because i wrote you to say you're lovely and i want to meet you?
lots of weirdos on the web. some not even what they appear to be.
and as you said, no photos, no portfolio.
if you're in this business, or any business, would you have something to show?
oh, most of my clients were doing nudes so i cannot present my portfolio . there is such a thing as model release.
so as most here are saying, you're walking on very thin ice here. be careful.
even meeting someone with your bodyguard tagging along, would not really prevent problems. some may be pranks. they don't show up.
check their references, check their work, get more info before even heading out to meet them. they're offering you lots of money, they're giving you free something...
Nothing is ever free. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
TAKE CARE.
you provide the character, and i will take care of the rest to capture your persona.

Type the name of the photographer into your searchbar before you even think of meeting them. A reputable photographer will always have links come up. Find a link with a gallery connected, and check their work. After you've done that, follow everybody elses advice.

I'm not sure how much success you will get with this method. Take me for example, I typed in Mike
Jones into Google and I got everything I wanted to know about Mike Jones the rapper. I typed in Mike Jones Photographer and I found out there are tons of togs called Mike Jones all with galleries. If models are going to have to search to find the togs gallery why not just ask the tog for the link.

I also tried Photography by Mark as I assumed the only reason you said it was because it works with your name. Sure enough there were 2 perfect hits. .COM was under construction and the other was a wedding photographer who was obviously not you.

I suspect that unless you are looking for a famous tog that you are not going to find them with a search engine, especially if they have a very common name, or just go by their first name.

This is very true and sound advice! however, I note that photographers can have a mass of photos, yet with no tags or reference to who the photos are or in what capacity they are shown, therefore a fake photographer could actually still show photos of anything that they think would attract!

I would, therefore suggest if that is the case, then ensuring that the website links of such photographers actually link to pages! People and prior work, to ensure that they are genuine! Contact details of people that have worked with them in the past and actually met them and know they the way they work is of immense value and will take many doubts out of the equasion!

Do not take anyone at face value regardless of what they say or appear to be, like the poster here says 'BE SAFE'

I don't believe a line exists (or gray area either) between healthly cautious and overly cautious. Know all the facts first. Ask questions. Take along companion and meet in public area. If it doesn't look or feel good, it probably isn't. Don't sacrifice yourself trying to "make it." I am new, registered as "scout", but want to do photography (not yet a photographer!!), and will do all I can to alay fears or concerns from a model I am interested in. If I don't receive a message back, I will not pursue or harass. This seems a friendly site, no room for garbage.

Yip! be safe!
There's a lot of photographers right now are turning to press work...
papperazzi stuff with the big bucks rolling in, though a lot do fashion & glamour/nude modelling shoots their too busy chasing some star in among a pack of money hungry photographers just for a chance of a huge sum off a tabloid newspaper/magazine:D
and it's huge what they pay out when you catch a pop star or actress on the hop;)
