Where I am at, photographers have to do all the required retouching themselves. its not strange.

Yeap.. same here. It's easier.. the same person knows what and how to shoot to enable him to do post processing. Creativity needed in enhancing the mood potrayed by the subject. A wedding photographer however, need to be more creative.. as they involve in designing the picture arrangement as well.

Not answering the question.. he he. They can copy. Get a sample.. and try to reproduce.. when it's enough copying.. they'll automatically come with own ideas..

I think those who have embraced digital photography learn what they need to of enhancing digital photos. Photographers who are still on film and amateurs who have not yet acquired the skills are probably the most likely to consider approaching a retouching artist.

imho the a photographer knows better how should a picture look like than an outsider retoucher :dunno: even a model can learn how to do that as she/he knows better what she/he wants to look like. i'm not against retouchers! i simply had met only two or three really talented one among many others:dunno:

Gisele Bundchen for Ipamena compaign was from head to feets in tatoo. Of course, she didn't do it, it was made on computer. So maybe for this kind of stuff. :)

They really do seem to go hand in hand, at least to me.
Before I even take a shot I know already if I need to change/remove something once the shot is taken, and if it's even worth taking the shot if it will need too much work.
If it's the latter case, I find a different subject.

I'm speaking about photography in general however, not just portraits.
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

How can a retoucher be creative?

Become an art director.

A retoucher corrects percieved flaws in a photo. An artist uses the photo to create a work which will serve an intended purpose. Commercial and graphic artists will use a photo within a concept usually designed to promote a product or event. An illustrative artist may take a photograph and thoroughly alter it into his.her vision of an artistic representation that stands of and by itself as a product, generally for sale or display.

There are no rules for the illustrative artist except to be recognized and get sales. The illustrative artist may use the photo as the canvas, a portion of the finished work even as the art medium. Anything goes!
