What is it? Do we need this? How PR can be useful for you? How to do a good PR campaign for yourself? Did you make your PR?
I am still here

Mystery woman, thought to be international model, Yana Popova, spotted last weekend on Florida beach. Rumor has it she was there with a secretive Ukrainian millionaire on his private yacht.

Now, now Yana. Spreading rumors? That looks like my beach when it's cold (for us Floridians). And you are dressed like one of us forced to go near cold ocean .

To make it look good, you must be in tiny bikini (with dark sunglasses) having a good time in the edge of the surf. Or dressed to kill with hot clothes and scarf hiding face while coming out of night spot. Or looking up with surtprise toward papparazzi camera from deck of yacht, topless, but still wearing sunglasses (for mysteries' sake).

Then here's a popping headline:

Topless Yana caught in Florida on rich boy toy yacht!!!

See, I was a newspaperman, too.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Nice plot, Charles :D But what is it PR? Just rumours? Can you become famous with it help? and other questions that need answers are here :)
I am still here

PR stands for Public Relations, although it is often taken to mean Press Release. But the idea of PR is get one's name before the public.

In the case of models, photographers, designers, etc. PR can bring them recognition and jobs. One can become a celebrity before actually doing anything, as Paris Hilton did. But she had tons of money behind her.

Marilyn Monroe did many small parts and obscure photo shoots before Playboy started and used one of her shoots for their first centerfold. To have been shot nude like that did not harm her reputation because se was already on her way up.

A well-known fact of Hollywood life was the press agent distributing nasty rumors about their own clients just to keep their names in the news. The belief is that it doesn't matter what's said about you as long as your name is spelled correctly.

So PR can be carefully made up rumors, or aboveboard press campaign with flyers and releases. The funny thing is (and I've worked on both sides, press and PR) is that no matter how well written the press release, if it's glanced at before it's tossed in the trash, the subject of the release is lucky. But let a good juicy rumor come along and everyone is hot to print it.

But that works better if you're famous first. To get famous means getting jobs, being seen in ads, commercials, editorial content, all the things you already do.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Having both created and received countless press and promo releases.
I can say hands down, that the gimmicks and rumors are what makes people pay attention.
Publicity stunts are nasty business, I tried to stay far away from them, as well as to take advantage of them.

I can't imagine that it's different in modeling. But in the music biz, this is referred to as a publicity stunt, plain and simple. PR does stand for public relations which are the one(s) who control what is done/said/allowed. Never have I heard someone refer to a Press Release as "PR," rather what is in said Press Release can be consider good/bad public relations (aka PR).
Heck, it's hard enough for most to know the difference between a press release and a promo release, they don't need this added nonsense. :cantlook:
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

Angel,

I was referrring to outsiders who haven't worked in the business. I have run across non-press people who don't know the difference between public relations, press releases and Puerto Rico.:D

Now, I'll admit I've never had to do a promo, but plenty came across my desk, so I know what you're talking about. Sometime releases and promos save a small publication from having to use a generic filler.

Nihongo wakirimaska?

I plan on going back in a couple of years. One last long look.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Charles: Ha! It was a very common question with those just starting out. I got asked the difference so many times, I began to forget the answer myself at times!

Sadly many can not write a press release to save their lives, sure I'd use any good photos which came along with them but I would always come up with my own snippet of wording, at least until they started to really crack down on that and at times demanded you use what they wrote word for word, or ELSE.
One was so ridiculous I addressed the matter with the band themselves (whom it was written about). Even brought the Press Kit with me, we had a good laugh and then said they wanted to fire who ever wrote it!

Hai! Nihongoga skoshi wakarimasu.
Very close... would be "Nihongoga wakarimasu ka" demo... ii desu! ^_^

Where have you visited over there?
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

Charles, you said one thing like "that works better if you're famous first"

I think you are right, if you are famous people would love to get to know some interesting rumours about you...

But PR could be a profession for some people, so if I hire PR professionalist, he will be able to make me famous with a help of PR campaigns or not?

I just wondering in this question :)
I am still here

Yana, better you get represented by a model agency, then after making some money, if you still feel the need, hire a publicist.

Angel, Yep, my Nihongo sucks. It's been too long since I was there. First in the 60s and then for three years in the 80s. Plus I get my Punjabi- and Hindi mixed in with the Japanese or Domo Arigato Beaucoup. Getting old is also a bummer.

I've been almost everywhere in Japan except that island off the inland sea. Shikoku? Memory fails.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Yana:

I would not worry much about a PR person or team right now. You need an agency out there to help you get that work.
Once you are established, if you choose, you can higher a person or a team for your PR which are hand chosen by you to work in your best interest.
Just from personal experience, I would not allow someone else (let alone a corporation) to assign me a PR team.
They then can, if they wish, also misrepresent you or destroy you.
I was the Director of Artists Relations for my co. Believe me, the name Public Relations is indeed, just that, not simply a fancy title. It is all about "relationships" that you make.
You wouldn't keep around a untrustworthy friend, why would you want flaky PR?

Even if you do some day find a PR that is great, it takes a tremendous amount of time/energy and creativity to make things work.

Your PR is your life line, they are your final defence between competition, reporters and the like. At this point in the game, I'm sure you could see why you don't need that yet, if ever.

Charles: There is a lot of Spanish where I work, I often get frustrated answering questions in the wrong language :/
Most of my co-workers are native Spanish speaking, my boss spent years in Japan, so I speak Japanese with him, and then there is of course English.
If you have not been to Kyoto, I highly recommend it. My favorite place on Earth.
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

I've been there several times. The first was very wonderful. Arrived three hours before dawn, found a open air coffee shop across from train station, chatted with young couple out on a date. They ended up taking me at dawn to the gates of the great temple, I don't remember the name--the East-West temple-- and knocking on the door, getting a priest to open up and they took me and a buddy (we were soldiers on R&R) on a private guide tour of the whole thing. When I came back in the 80's I took my wife and children there. It was still just as amazing.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Charles:

so desu ne!! Nothing like Japan at dawn. I'd always wake up extra early so I could take a stroll down to the nearest vending machine for some Fire. Just walking around the houses, parks, saying good morning to the people out sweeping their shops for the day, one of my simplest pleasures.
I have only been there twice in the past year but I intend to go back many times and if I'm lucky, to move there.

If you like meeting a variety of people, I highly recommend going to "A Bar". Now, it's not usually my type of place, but I couldn't resist stopping in at least once on each visit.
It was listed as a relaxing izakaya though it is anything but! If you go at a busy time, you never know what kind of people you will end up sitting next to.

I don't know if you enjoy sake, but stop into Yomaru Sake Bar. It's owned by a local resident whom is originally from Isreal. He is very knowledgeable about sake and has a wide assortment of drinks which is either hard or next to impossible to find else where.

In Tokyo, check out "piss alley" (aka Shomben Yokochu). If you ask a native they will laugh at you, but if you read about it in depth, you will understand why I recommend it.

Do you speak any Kansai-ben dialect?

I'm sorry, but I had to say this, a line in your profile made me admire you, at least a little bit.
"I work in the mode of photojournalism using the least flash necessary..."
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

When we go back, we'll probably do a little of everything, but not much bar-hopping, i expect. Although I do love trying out regional sakes and Sapporo on draft. I might do a few Ofuros, hot springs spas. Maybe I'll refresh my skosh Nihongo a little. I want to see that island, Shikoku, and return to Aomori-ken to see how it has changed. I know an artist who lives near Kyoto, and I wonder if he's still with us.

A sentimental journey.

As far as the shooting goes, I work less and play more these days. I don't feel as clever as I once did, so my writing is more simplistic and my poetry often introspective.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Charles:

That's the part about Yomaru which I enjoy... It's a small, low key place for sophisticated drinkers.
I spent my time doing some touristy stuff, but most of it was the shops/eats that were out of the way, locally owned, doing things that the typical Japanese would do in a given day.

I went to a onsen on my last trip in Hakone (essentially a resort town in the mountains near Fuji.) It was a very nice experience but really, I don't know how people can stay in there for more then a few minutes! I just kept saying to my friend "Atsuidesune!!"

I hope to bring my kid there once she grows a little more. There are still several places I want to visit.

I truly hope if you ever get to go back that you have a wonderful time.

I no longer work as a photographer, I just do it as a hobby. I don't do the same kind of sessions that I used to, and for a while I really didn't know what to do next, so I'm still very much in the experimental stage and I find that thrilling.
I was not allowed to use the flash period, in my work. Now adays I feel almost over whelmed with choices concerning what I can do with lighting.
Everything I've done, and all that I have yet to do, is only to forget the meaning of your name.

Angel, this is a pretty complicated way to chat. You can get to my email by going to my profile and clicking on the link to my "official website", really just a gallery of recent stuff. Or you can try advaitin (at) earthlink (dot) net and I'll correspond.
If I haven't been there, I'm still planning on going!
If I haven't done it, I've still got time to try!

Great feed back Charles !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was wondering not for myself, just I find it an interesting topic to get to know about
