Choose black and white photos or color shots for showing !
In this digital age should photos be stored on dvds when models are
showing their book. |

Sometimes black and white are better sometimes color, depending on what type of
shot it is and the background.Howdy.I'm a 18 year old half asian from Ireland who really would love to get with an agency who can get her exposure or anything please look at my profile and get back to me |

that one can do almost anything in the world. B&W, Color, Natural, Touched
(probably clients need to know how can your photos be touched). In terms of
medium.. i'd say i's mandatory for one to have printed portfolio to show.. and
CD's to be given away if necessary. Previously.. DVD is not adviseable as some
people doesn't read DVDs. Nowadays.. not so sure. |

diversity. I think Adi said it best when he said that your portfolio should show
that you can do anything. You just need to be careful with B&W because while
most photos will look ok in colour some will look really bad in B&W

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are both relatively new technologies and quite expensive for
the burners and not a lot of people will have the ability to play them either so
suggesting something like that isn't really a good idea just yet in my
opinion.
Putting your pictures on a website or CD is a good idea though because again it
shows diversity and while you would still hand up some printed photos, having
them online or on CD allows you to hand over more that the person can look at if
they wish, but they don't take up a load of space on their desk/filing cabinet. We Don't Take Risks to Escape Life!!

Now, from the perspective of someone who has worked with model agencies for 25
years...
Black and white does not do diddly squat for you in helping get you recruited.
Who is impressed by black and white? The new age people who were not forced to
grow up with it.
25 years ago black and white shooting was the norm when half tone screens could
not easily discern red from black, dark hued blues from black, light greens from
yellow and light shade from white. Remember neutral density filters? Yeah...I
thought not.
Then soft-dot grey half tone screens came along and editorial photographers were
like "Hallelujah"! And tossed aside the extra two hernia-enabling cameras. It
was one for black and white film, another one or even two for different ASA/ISO
color films and one for color transparency. Soft dot screens meant we could
finally shoot everything in color and not worry about loss of grey tones and
contrast when converting over to black and white for newsprint or magazine
publishing.
The world was safe and finally accurate color rendition and translation reigned.
Color printing prices dropped significantly...from over $300 per color
separation to under $10 in less than two years.
Then some idiot decided that black and white was artistic, totally puzzling
everyone in the industry who understood that art has nothing to do with the
medium. But we got over our puzzlement quickly and instead started laughing out
loud rolling on the floor. Who gives a horse's rear caboose whether or not you
can take a picture in black and white? In the old days, sepia-tone or even
solarization was cool. (Think the movie 300 if you don;t know what sepai-tone or
solarization is.) Today, black and white seems cool. Click a drop down menu item
in Photoshop and Woila! You are "artistic". Bah, humbug. Oh! Add a dash of color
to a small area off the black and white image and you are doubly cool! Double
Bah, humbug!
Bottom line: Will having a black and white photo help you get signed by
an agency? The answer is a resounding NO!
I see models adding black and white images to their portfolios thinking they
will help. However, the one type of photo that can help the most almost
no one includes in their ports...the ubiquitous
Polaroid/Snapshot!
Yes. people that helps you the most. I could care less how you
look in make-up. Make up is a lie. Agencies need the truth. Embarrassed to be
photographed without make-up? Well, there is no room for embarrassment in this
industry. Jurgita helps immensely by giving you the option of keeping
Polaroid/Snapshots private from the general public. Use that feature and add
this very important element to your ports.
I do believe that a lot of the confusion over ports begins with a basic
misunderstanding of the various genres of the modeling industry. Glamour
modeling and commercial modeling are like apples and oranges. A model
specializing in commercial modeling can do glamour once in a while, no problem.
However, it is rare that a glamour model makes the jump to commercial work. Why?
Because the commercial industry tends to be very, very conservative and cautious
about the moral sensitivities of the bulk of the customers.
If you want to do glamour...sure, mix it up...because in glamour photography, to
get gigs, the goal is to show that you can get an audience horny. It's a meat
show with your body on parade so you will want to show off all your various
aspects and get hired by photographers and tabloids.
But in the commercial world the photographers do not do the hiring and there is
an established matrix for determining viability of a model for generating
sales.
I do do not know what color you skin tone is in black and white. It is a pig in
the poke. Useless. This goes the same for the fashion world. Not much clothing
gets sold in black and white and, bottom line, the job of a fashion model is to
sell clothing.
But, I am probably bashing my head against a brick wall and shouting at deaf
ears. So, go ahead...use the 90 seconds granted you for an agency interview by
pestering them with black and whites. The yawning will be profound and the
"Next!" positively resounding. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |

Well i have a serpiar picture as my default picture cos i really like it, i
didnt really like the original but i thought it looked amazing after. Wheras i
wouldnt do it to too many of my photos i think one or two it really adds an
interesting aspect to the photo and can change it from a plain photo to a good
photo It really just depends on what the photo is trrying to
achieve, now my next comment is personal opinion so nobody start whinging please
but i think the lack of colour on my picture gives a really good sense of deep
thought on my behalf. I feel its due to the lack of colour that the picture
works how it does, so in summary i generally think that black and white is good
for pictures where you are not trying to show your looks but a state of mind or
emotion instead.
