Lithuania is required reading. So, I might break your grading curve.
Huh, you ask? What does Lithuania have to do with modern journalism? That is
something that I am hoping every native Lithuanian knows since that country
holds a vital part in the history and eventual civilization of Europe.
Your language is one of the oldest in Europe. Pretty much what ancient SUmaria
was to Africa and the Middle East, Lithuania is to Europe.
You are descended from the Batlics. You have been separated a little more than
200 years from your brothers, the Poles. For 400 years, Lithuania and Poland
were one dynasty. A little shake up from the French Revolution and angst from
the Prussians ended that. By the end of it all, Russia claimed you.
We got you your independence back after World War One, but Poland got greedy and
within a year had you on the run, taking a chunk of your country. Wonderful
thanks for all the years you sheltered and protected them.
During World War Two Russia came back, got run out by the Germans but, a few
years later, the Russians were back like a bad rash. In the fuss, your Jewish
community was virtually annihilated and tens of thousands of Lithuanians were
kidnapped as prisoners to Siberia and many other civilians were simply
killed.
In more mordern history, the Republic of Lithuania is 17 years old. After the
fall of the Soviet Union independence movements rallied and eventually declared
independence. Russia tried to intervene but there was an embarrassing massacre
of more than a dozen civilians broadcast world wide. Russia tucked its brutal
tail between its legs and ran home. Lithuania devised its own money, then
immediately tied its value to that of the U.S. dollar. To my shame, I have not
really kept up to what is happening as regards the EU, so I do not know if
Lithuania has any monetary dealings with the Euro.
I do know that Lithuania a few hundred years ago had a significant impact on
European art. A century ago you produced one of the world's great music and art
talents in the form of Mika Konstantine Ciurlionis. (Heaven knows if I
spelled his name right. I remembered his name for tests by thinking Mika's
Constantly a Curly Lion. Sorry). Here in the Virgin Islands, our Catholic
Diocese is headed by the Cathedral Church of Sts. Peter and Paul. In Lithuania
the church of Sts. Peter in Paul stands as one of the art showpieces of the
continent. Our murals are based on the paintings in that church. Our statues
reflect the same. The Jesuit priests, who started your Vilnius University, are
also the ones who started the Catholic faith in the Virgin Islands. (It is now
run by the Redemptorist sect, though.) If I am not mistaken, the Vilnius
University was the first university in Eastern Europe.
Lasty, the famous Jurgita lives there.
So ends my Reader's Digest version of your history. I smack my head around a
little, I can probably remember a little more to bore you guys with. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
