| Date: 2007-04-12 14:44 DAY OF SILENCE, April 18, 2007: The Day
of Silence is an annual event held to bring attention to anti-LGBT bullying,
harassment and discrimination in schools. Students and teachers nationwide will
observe the day in silence to echo the silence that LGBT and ally students face
everyday. In it's 11th year, the Day of Silence is one of the largest
student-led actions in the country.
Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence® has become the largest single student-led
action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation,
gender identity or gender expression. From the first-ever Day of Silence® at
the University of Virginia in 1996, to the organizing efforts in over 1,900
middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities across the country in
2002, its textured history reflects its diversity in both numbers and reach.
What is the Day of Silence®?
Now in its tenth year, the Day of Silence, a project of GLSEN® or the Gay,
Lesbian & Straight Education Network in collaboration with the United States
Student Association (USSA), is a student-led day of action where those who
support making anti-LGBT bullying and harassment unacceptable in schools
participate in events to recognize and protest the discrimination and
harassment—in effect, the silencing—experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender (LGBT) students and their allies.
The Day of Silence® is an annual opportunity for students to tell their truths
about anti-LGBT bullying, violence and harassment. A GLSEN® commissioned
survey, From Teasing to Torment: School Climate in America conducted by Harris
Interactive, found that sexual orientation and gender expression are among the
top three reasons teens report that students are harassed at their schools.
GLSEN’s 2003 National School Climate Survey found that 4 out of 5 LGBT
students report verbal, sexual or physical harassment at school and more than
30% report missing at least a day of school in the past month out of fear for
their personal safety.

the idea of silence is to show people what it is like to be a closeted gay.
some homosexuals remain closeted because of fear of bullinyg, abuse, resentment,
etc etc- taking one day of your 365 days to be silent and feel teh fear and
anxiety they do- you should try it.
it will be hard not to talk- at the end of the day, you'll want to scream your
lungs out- imagine that feeling every. single. day- not being able to scream to
the mountains who you really are.
take a step back. |

school.
It used to be a big thing but eventually people realised that were all alike.
I know i had gotten bullied at first.. mainly due to the fear, but then was
sorta like it never happened people were interested in it.Live life to the max and never look back!
People are less likely to let their fears win,
When they can do what they want when they try. |

That made me
laugh
Homophobes!.. they're everywhere!..
I say we start calling the next Tsunami that floods southeastern Asia, "the
Homophobe". I imagine the headlines: "Several thousand people we killed
yesterday by the Homophobe. If you're thinking of going out on the beach his
weekend, think again: the Homophobe will be throwing enormous waves on your
seaside. Goddamn Homophobe!!!..
Don't get me wrong, but if we start to commemorate every reason to bully a kid
in school, we'll run out of days in no time.I knew for sure our chance was blown when rifles made us feel at home. |

Lesbian and the G is Gay. What do the B and T stand for? I am hoping it is not
Butt and Tongue.
Sarah, I applaud you for your activism and your involvement in one of the many
popular trends-du jour. The homosexual lobby in the United States has become one
of the largest, richest and most influencial of all lobbies and affects health
care, government budgets, industries, labor laws and religous institutions. With
the exception of the Republican Party and the Oil lobby, there is not a more
powerful movement in the world.
Anti gay sentiment is alive and well in the Virgin Islands. Homophobia is not.
Residents have no unreasoned fear of homosexuals. At least the adults don't.
Young males here do have to worry because there is quite a bit of juvenile
predation that occurs among the community of very rich business owners. We are a
luxury shopping destination and for some reason the huge jewelry and fashion
conglomorate of Europe that base their U.S. headquarters here import a high
percentage of homosexual men for their upper management.
A few times a year there are gay cruises that ply the Caribbean. They set up a
multi island itinery but almost always end up spending the cruises only between
St. Thomas and Puerto Rico. The reason for this is that we are U.S. and cannot
bar the ships from docking. The other Caribbean islands however engage in
mob-like protests to block the ships. Most Caribbean islands now have laws
banning gay cruises.
I recognize that gay does not mean pedophile. However it would be nice if we had
a few of those gay men and women who do not target children. I know what they
say but I also know that this is such a small community that we know almost
everything that goes on. Normally one worries about their daughters being out of
the house. Here, I grew up having to keep the merchants hands off of me. In
recent years there has been an increase in lesbianism locally. Immediately they
started scouring the schools and inviting the girls to girls only parties. These
parties were wild, had free flow of drugs and alcohol and would result in the
lesbian seduction of drunk and high teenagers. Police? How? A good percentage of
police women attended these parties.
Say what you want that these activities are not normal of gay people and that
the authorities should be called. However, the gay movement has such a large and
powerful propaganda machine if you ever take any action against a gay offender
you get labelled a homophobe, close minded and prejudiced.
We experience it. And we experience it often. The unenforceable violations of
our youth have grown to such a high proportion that once in a while parents have
had to take the law into their own hands and there have been deaths. Yes,
typically the law has ignored those murders thinking that yes, the person
deserved it.
I do not know if our situation is different from the rest of the country or the
rest of the world. Perhaps the wrong element is attracted to a U.S. jurisdiction
1200 miles from the mainland and percieved to be a haven. All I do know is that
a large number of homosexuals here are predators and that there has been little
done about it.
Bash me now if you please, say that not all gays are like that, say that
straight people molest as well, but if you have not lived or experienced
directly what they do and the damage they can cause then...do not say a freaking
word!
I, for one, have no intention of being silent. I do not wear my sexuality on my
sleeve. Have faith that the universe will unfold as it should |
