Yeah. Why are whites afraid to say 'black'? And what's up with the "PC" phrase "African American"? People keep calling me that and I wasn't born in the Americas. I was born in the Caribbean. I was born in the United States of America but not in America. So, for whatever reason someone thought the word "black" was offensive and figured that labeling me as something I am not is more acceptable. :dunno: :upset: Idiots.

I don't know of any blacks that like the phrase African American, Coloured or Negro. And African American is the most irritating of all. It implies an ignorance on the users part plus a desire to categorize me based upon their own insecurities.

There is a poem, author unknown, that everyone should memorize:

A black man talks to a white man:
When I was born I was black,
When I grew up I was black,
When I'm sick I'm black,
When I go in the sun I'm black,
When I'm cold, I'm, black,
When I'm scared, I'm black,
When I'm sick, I'm black,
When I die I'll still be black.

But you:
When you're born you're pink,
When you grow up you're white,
When you're sick, you're green,
When you go in the sun you turn red,
When you're cold you turn blue,
When you're scared, you're yellow,
When you're bruised, you're purple,
and when you die you turn grey.
And you have the nerve to call me colored.

How do you, Americans, call such countries as Niger and Nigeria? Maybe, African America and African Americania.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Can you rephrase it and then maybe I can answer you proper?

That’s local joke about people who call all blacks “African Americans” even if they are not from Africa or America.

:D I like that poem

Good point!

I heard that Nelson Mandela was on a tour to the US and was being interviewed. His interviewer asked a question about being African American at which Mr Mandela became somewhat irate and insisted "I am not African American, I am black!"

To me a terms such as "black" is a useful identifying feature about a person which might help me to point out hte person to whom I'm referring, just as I might say "the tall person" or "the bald person" if those are the features which most easily differentiate that individual from others around them.

On which note, I would insist that "I am not folically challenged, I am bald!"

Please accept my apologies, but a lot of the time if you are not black yourself and use the term black online people start having a go at you and because you said the word black it automatically makes you a racist. So I tend to use the word coloured (as crap a word as it is)because it is more PC and makes it less likely for someone to give out.

Carrib...Sorry to you too...I love that poem always makes me laugh...and I'm not afraid to use the word black, I just prefer not to until I know a person and know how they feel on the matter, because I do not aim to cause people offence, although in this case using the more PC version caused people offence.

Simon...I cannot understand why African American is more PC. It is a totally inaccurate term! Most black I know, here and in the U.S. are not even or pure African descent! They have white, Indian, Asian and many more ethnicities mixed in. And...you see someone and they are black...how the heck can you look at someone and know that they are American? Like I said, being born in the Caribbean, I was NOT born in the Americas. Yes, I am a native born United States Citizen, but NOT from the Americas! Only ignorant people would call me African American. I am also Spanish and Indian descent as well as African. But my skin color is a sepia brown. My facial features look racially black. So, I am black!

All racial references to an individual are tricky given the present and historical state of racial tensions, stereotyping and judgments. Racism is rooted in fear, so we cannot be governed by fear when we are in a situation when a person has to be identified by race. I have actually heard white people correct other white people telling them to refer to me as African American. Do you know how that condescending arrogance makes my blood boil? Who the heck are they to label me? Political Correctness is just a cover-up. Be honest if people have the guts. African American is just a term coined in ignorance that white people use and that black on TV and radio are forced to use to cater to their white corporate bosses.

So, don't worry, Simon. I like you. The pressures of modern society just make it so that we are never certain what is right, especially as intelligent and creative people. Aw, heck, just go against the grain, be yourself and we will all respect you for the person you are, not the color you are!

(PS: Notice that the black person who started this forum said "black" not "African American.")
