Neither have a greater influence you need both to sell an item

as cindy said you said need both...if u don't market you don't get the brand awareness necessary to increase sales....with a bad design you loose a lot of potential customers as they feel the product won't be what they want or need or isn't visually appealing to them....so both marketing and design are linked and essential in the sales process
