Under a standing ovation, short for his age and bony, Karim Davis strutted astage for his National Junior Honor Society induction in orange Hawaiian shorts and a red flower-print top instead of the customary shirt and tie. The auditorium erupted into a standing ovation. He was 14.
Karim excelled in the performing arts… as a top musician in the band, acting in 3 plays (writing one… in Spanish), and singing a duet of the graduation song to the senior class. The popular student was voted Trezevant High School's Most School Spirited in 1987, graduated 11th in the class, and was elected president of Honor Society. He joined the U.S. Air Force at 17 and earned much acclaim following a stage performance in a talent show. Karim completed his tour of duty with an honorable discharge and enrolled at Nashville‘s Fisk University in 1991, intending to go on to law school as was desired by his family.
A 3-story fall from a friend's apartment staircase left him gravely disabled two years later. The recovery was slow and utterly depressing, but it afforded Karim the time to assess his true potential. While finishing a bachelor of arts at the University of Memphis, Karim returned to his roots, appearing in communications for various employers until he landed his first paid role in “EMMETT,“ about the Civil Rights Era murder of Emmitt Till. Karim is separated and has a 9-year old son, who lives in Florida. He currently lives in Memphis, Tennessee.
